I traded into this guy yesterday and was able to fire about 50 rds through it. Accuracy was ok, nothing to write home about, but that is not what this gun was designed for.

Using Remington Corelok 180gr ammo, 50yd groups with the red dot was about 1.5”. I was able to keep 5 shots on a 6” target at 100yds with the dot. I’m going to use it for hogs in heavy brush, so the accuracy is ok.

I’m not sure how that dot will handle the heat from that rail and may go with a Leupold 2.5x.

What optics are you guys running on your SOCOMS?

Any issues with the provided rail holding zero?

The camo matches my stone when it is wet….lol

Looks fun! Let me know if you need help with hog control! I'm only 3 hours away.

Although I don't have a SOCOM, I run a Vortex razor 1-6 on my scout.

I don't know of anyone who has actually tested the scout rail to see if it holds zero.

Tony.

I ditched the factory scout rail on my SOCOM, and used an Ultimak rail instead. Initially I used an Aimpoint PRO, and then swapped to a lighter Aimpoint T2.

The factory rail is only held to the barrel with a couple small screws, so it doesn't seem to be the most stable. It's also fairly tall, so you usually cannot get a good cowitness with the iron sights, and also may need a cheek riser (like you have on yours). The Ultimak is rock-solid, and optics in low mounts cowitness nicely, while being able to use a normal cheek weld.

But then within a short time I ditched my SOCOM in favor of a Scout with a gas block front sight, which is roughly the same overall size as the SOCOM. It does everything the SOCOM does and more, without the SOCOM's proprietary gas system and with an 18" barrel and the ability to use whatever muzzle device I want (or none, or direct-thread a can)

What's the twist on your rifle? 180g may be a bit on the heavy side. Try something in the 165-168g or even 150g. Your accuracy may improve.

SOCOM is a terrific rifle, in my mind a full battle rifle in 7.62x51. It packs punch.

I have had a SOCOM 16 with an Aimpoint Pro for several years and never had a problem with the red dot and heat.

As I am sure you know by now, the muzzle brake is very loud. Sure will clear out an indoor range.

It is a heck of a hog gun. I have taken a few deer with it as well.

A friend of mine calls it the loud bastard. I haven’t shot mine in years. It’s bone stock. I need to put a dot or small scope on it for a heck of a winter truck gun. I can’t remebr if the brake unscrews for suppressor use or not.

Following g this thread for sighting suggestions.

Yep.

Which is why I specifically did not put a brake on it when I modified my Scout into a quasi-SOCOM, choosing a flash hider instead. The recoil isn't bad, and I didn't want the obnoxious concussion like the SOCOM had.

The brake is attached to the gas lock (along with the front sight). So you can unscrew the entire assembly for field stripping after taking out the gas plug, but you can't just unscrew the brake alone to thread on a suppressor, and you can't unscrew the entire assembly to thread on a suppressor and keep firing.

If that's what you're wanting to do with a SOCOM, you'd need to replace it with an aftermarket gas lock with a front sight dovetail and threaded muzzle, like this one from Smiths: https://www.smithenterprise.co...l-socom-16-gas-lock/

The Ultimak is the way to go here. I found a low scope ring that allowed the rubber flip cap, but am using the see-thru caps.

The SOCOM is a good rifle, and the minor upgrades like the spring guide, piston, chrome-moly spring.. all worth it. Get the trigger tuned.

I have had a Burris scout scope on the factory rail for several years, 2-3 thousand rounds. No problems.

I did some reading and discovered the guys using SOCOMS are issued 130gr OTM. I’m not sure how true that is, but it came from the M14 Forums and those guys over there know their stuff.

They also said the gun does well with 110gr VMax and 125gr TNT. I happened to have both so I loaded up 10 of each. I used H335 for the 110gr and Varget for the 125. The 110gr gave a hell of a flash and had absolutely horrible accuracy at 50 yds. The 125gr TNT did well and had I been using a magnified optic, I think the group would be an inch or less at 50yds.

I found a bottle of 3031 which is also stated to work well in the SOCOM. More testing to follow.

Before you give up on the 110s, try something other than H335. I love 335 in .223, but any time I've tried using it in anything .30 caliber I've been less than impressed.

Benny,

I did not realize you are that close. I need to take a road trip and have a rifle built by you. I drool over your M1A pics.

I have the slightly larger brother, the scout squad with a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 scope on it.

For your use with hogs in heavy cover, I think the red dot is probably better, and certainly lighter.

I find that I like the 2x magnification best under 100 yards or freehand, but with magnification up to 7x, I can reach out with this rifle if I want to.
