How Come My 1993 P228 Grips Don't Fit My 1992 P228? Login/Join

So I have a SIG P228 1992 date code (9mm) that I recently sent to SIG for service (night sights, springs, etc.) and new grips since the Hogue grips I've been using aren't a favorite.

As they no longer have grips marked P228 I got classic grips marked P229. So I hunted down some 1993 grips marked P228 but they don't line up at all and I can't install them? They are only a year apart and I cannot figure out what the problem might be?

It's crazy that new production P229 grips fit my old 1992 SIG but original P228 grips from a year later will not.

What am I doing wrong?

You’re not doing anything wrong. I would guess that SIG Sauer Inc. installed at least the newer style of trigger bar spring (with the loop) when you sent the gun in for service. That alone would prevent the older style of grips (such as those from 1993) from seating.

Also, a P228 that says “Made in Germany” instead of “Made in W. Germany” isn’t from 1992 anyway.

Yep. That, plus the current plastic mainspring seat.

Yeah, something doesn’t jive here, because he said it’s a “1992 date code”, and that presumably is “KC” on the chin of the slide. If it’s truly KC, and the slide is what’s shown in the photo, then he just might have a unicorn on his hands.

Original 1992 slide cracked and was replaced.

Well, that's a wannabe unicorn, then. Big Grin

Btw, that folded slide probably has seen a lot of +P rounds for it to crack.

So is there any way to make the 228 grips fit. I know it's stupid but having 229 marked grips on my 228 makes me nuts.

If you're skilled with the Dremel tool and are willing to alter the '93's grip panels, then remove the the unneeded parts shown in the photos.

The part circled in red in the first photo interferes with the coiled TBS.

The part circled in red in the second photo interferes with the plastic mainspring seat. You will also need to remove the identical part on the left side panel.

Alternatively, you can try to track down a NOS original style (uncoiled) TBS, maybe on fleabay or GB. That way, you don't have to carve away at the '93 factory grips.

Btw, what kind of Hogue grips you've been using that you don't like? Are they the rubber ones? If so, I don't blame you. Most folks hate those. And, if so, get the Hogue G10 grips in black Checkered, if you don't want to permanently alter the factory grips.

Actually never used +P even once. Used WWB 115 gr. for range ammo and 147 gr hydra shocks as carry ammo. But it probably had a round count around 20,000 rounds.

It was my second most carried gun after my P226 and saw lots of range time.

It doesn't seem like it has fit problems up top, but I should probably post pics with the grips removed so I know EXACTLY what the problem is.

Yeah, I had old rubber finger groove grips. I want to get it back to Sig Classic as much as I'm able.

Here is the inside of my 93 date P228 grips, it looks like those areas are already clear.

No they are not. They are identical to mine, year 1990 grips. Just compare those to the P229 grips and the differences will be clear.
