Just received their email.

quote:
Dear Customer,

As of June 28, 2022, Fed Ex implemented a change in their shipping procedure; ID scanning to be required for adult signatures. Their scanning technology will:

* Capture the recipient’s name associated with the ID and auto-populate the first initial and last name.
* Confirm the recipient is 21 years or older.

Their software does not record any other personal data (e.g., driver's license number, phone number(s), birthdate, home address, etc.). See more information about this here.

Due to a change in policy from our freighter, SIG SAUER is implementing a change in our shipping procedure.

As of 1 September 2022, controlled items shipped via Fed Ex will require the following:

* Adult Signature Required
* Scanning of driver's license in order to verify age upon delivery

If the recipient refuses to show ID as proof of age and signature, SIG SAUER will consider the shipment as refused, which could incur restocking or reshipping fees.

We appreciate your assistance in ensuring we are all in compliance with these new industry shipping protocols.

It is what it is… Will just take some planning on my end to make sure wife or I are home when they deliver. Sounds like the only thing I get from them that is impacted is ammo when they have a special on calibers I use.

Curious if this is related to this as well?
Magazines to require adult delivery/signature/ID?

Guess it depends on their definition of 'controlled items'

We have received several packages from FedEx lately that require we show our drivers license and sign for the package. None of which were shipped by SIG

Had a pistol returned to my home address 6 weeks ago from Ruger. Nice FedEx lady delivering it required scan of my license along with a signature. Nice thing is she sorts the signature required packages and tries to get them delivered first thing in the morning.

100% horseshit

I am inclined to agree.

I just mailed something through FedEx today, something going out of the country. The FedEx employee required my driver's license and used an optical reader to scan the barcode/QR code on the back of my license. It automatically created a shipping label w/ my name, address, & phone#, so it would not surprise me if they have the rest of my info from my license saved too. Mad

I too am in the 100% horseshit camp. Does anyone know what type of info is digitally stored on a drivers license? Is it limited to address, DOB, height, weight, eye color & etc.? Thanks!

They did it to me at work today. Given what we do, I wasn’t surprised.

What if the recipient doesn't have State issued ID? Does the FedEx driver accept your passport or a copy of your birth certificate and a bill showing residency like the DMV does? Or what if the magnetic strip is damaged? Is their any leeway when making the delivery? Just wondering.

Paten I didn't have my wallet with me the other day when FedEx showed up and he said they would have to bring it back the next day. Lucky my wife Mary had hers

Only thing they required this of me on was returning my AXG from repair. No big deal. If you don't have a state ID, you have a gun? Didn't buy it retail then. If THIS is your big privacy concern, you haven't been paying attention. If you use a cell phone, the internet, or drive a late model car, or walk or drive in a big city, you're being tracked. You can avoid it, though. Just move to a cave, don't buy anything (cash sales often have video cameras) and don't get any mail or packages.

I, for one, will be mindful of this new FedEx policy, when ordering stuff from any vendors from now on. If you only use FedEx, and you require my signature, you will no longer get my business. FedEx will not be scanning my ID. Yeah, horseshit is right.

I hate to bust some bubbles here but the information on your DL is already out there plus a whole lot more. If you still are breathing it is all on the internet in certain data bases....

Used to have to pick up shipments at a UPS freight stations and they would not let you in the place and always had to take your DL and copy it. Went to pick up some frieght on a Saturday and could not find a person at the terminal which was wide open... found my pallet... loaded it up... found the paper work in the office and signed it and left it with who ever might show up or wake up... it's all just a dance to for folks to prove their jobs.

I had a bad customer service experience with FedEx years ago and would never use them myself for shipping. I despise receiving anything from them. Though this further adds to my disgust, I foresee this policy being adopted by every shipping service.

While we may be agreement digitization has lead to open access of personal information, the notion of a private corporation demanding this data as a condition of business is concerning. The line between big business and big government has become increasingly blurred. At what point does the infringement end?

Where there is no signature required, FedEx has also started capturing images of delivered parcels, presumably due to theft issues. I believe they started doing this about 2 weeks ago.

This was posted on the tracking page after a delivery today.
