U.S. Marine Corps Adopts SIG Sauer M18 Handgun
SIG Sauer announced this week that the U.S. Marine Corps is adopting the M18—the compact version of the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS)—as its official duty pistol. Speculation the branch would go with one of the two MHS versions was put to rest in the Navy’s 2019 budget estimate [PDF]—published in February 2018—although there was no early indication it preferred the 3.7-barreled version over the 4.7-inch barreled M17 receiving widest distribution by the U.S. Army.

The fiscal document’s Family of Infantry Weapons Systems also signaled an end to much of the Marine Corps sidearm diversity. “The Modular Handgun System will be purchased to replace the legacy M9, M9A1, M45A1, and M007 pistols with a more affordable and efficient pistol for maintenance,” it explained. “The MHS also provides modularity and greater shooter ergonomics over the current models which will allow for more accurate fire for military personnel of different sizes.” The M9s were standard issue, but the M45A1 typically went to recon and the M007 went to specialized units, including criminal investigation officers and helicopter team members assigned to Presidential duties.

“The Marine Corps announcement to put the M18 in service with the Marines is a very exciting development for SIG Sauer, and a true testament to the success of the MHS program,” said Ron Cohen, president and CEO of SIG Sauer. “The Marine’s procurement of the M18 brings the adoption of our Modular Handgun System full circle, as this means, beginning in 2020, either the M17 or the M18 will be officially in service with every branch of the U.S. Military."

Fighting units are expected to begin receiving M18s sometime in 2020, although a limited number of samples and testing batches have been received by the Marine Corps. This year the branch is scheduled purchase 35,000 at a price of roughly $6 million.

Results of a Material Reliability Test—released earlier this year—reported zero stoppages in three M18s selected for the exercise as they churned through 36,000 rounds (12,000 each). It set a new high-water mark for the protocol, which traditionally requires each gun to digest only 5,000 cartridges.

The M18 is a 9mm, striker-fired pistol featuring a coyote-tan PVD coated stainless steel slide with black controls. The pistol is equipped with SIGLITE front night sights and removable night sight rear plate, and manual safety.

Full replacement of the M9, which has been in service with the U.S. military since 1985, is a lengthy process. M17s and M18s were issued to members of the 101st Airborne in November 2017, for example, but units from the 82nd Airborne deploying the Afghanistan this month are carrying legacy M9s.

The P320 Carry, which is the configuration adopted as the M18, is a great duty gun. It's what I currently carry on duty.

Retains the full size grip with 17 round magazine, but the slightly shorter slide makes it slightly quicker to get out of the holster and slightly more compact while sitting and moving around (at least when not using a WML), with minimal loss of muzzle velocity and sight radius.

I get the G45 too. Just like the old commander 1911 or the Beretta Brigadier. I personally am not a fan of the configuration but then I’m not carrying in a duty holster either. I get the appeal to police and military. Especially police.

I’m only interested in buying a M18 because I’m a former Marine. It will most likely spend the majority of its life in a safe.

No need to get a whole 'nother M18, unless you really want to.

Just buy a Compact/Carry slide for your existing M17.

The M18 uses the same grip module, FCU, and 17 round mags. Just a slightly shorter slide.

(The M17 is a Full Size slide on a Carry grip. The M18 is a Carry/Compact slide on a Carry grip.)

Somehow I get the feeling that that'll be like buying another upper for an AR15 - sooner or later you'll just get the complete gun.

Really depends on the grip... if it is the standard size Sig grip then I'll pass... and I really don't like that extended magazine at all.

And I guess they put a safety on it for those grunts that can't learn trigger control.

The military feels differently. (I also keep some 21 round extended magazines handy for my duty P320.)

But they're optional, since the M17 also comes with flush 17 round magazines.

The 320 is a great pistol and the services will do well with it.

Glock will be producing a modular pistol in the next few years I do believe.

The Sigs are the Legos of the gun world!

I thought the grip module for both has the full length handle {same as the Fullsize}? Otherwise wouldn't there be a space between the mag baseplate and the grip?

Or is the "Carry" the full 21 shot handle with a shorter dust cover?

My Fullsize appears to have the same grip module as the M17 in your pic.

Yep. The Carry grip module has the full-length 17/21 round grip, but a shorter Compact-length muzzle end and rail.

Nope. Notice the extra portion of the Full Size slide that protrudes past the end of the grip module on the M17, while your Full Size slide is flush with the end of your FDE Full Size grip module.

Also, count the rail slots. The Carry (and M17) has 3 rail slots, while the Full Size has 5 rail slots.

Oh for cryin out loud. That's embarassing.

Right on you are!

Never noticed!

All makes sense now.

Thanks!

I'm reminded of the whole series of .45's that led up to the 1911 and then of course the 1911A1 later. Kind of interesting to see the sort-of parallel in the development of the M17/18 today, with the P250 the sort of "Colt 1905" and the then series of changes that gave us the later 1911, or M17/18 as it were.
