Thank you Very little |
After reading some recent thread comments about rust on some EDC firearms, ie mags, mag release, got me thinking it was time to discuss the care and feeding of our EDC firearms. Over time I've noticed a few rust spots on an EDC I carry most often. At one point the barrel tip rusted, both times on a Glock, G43 and G19, and this isn't about Glock, but about how to avoid it through maintaining your EDC. The G43 had rust spots on the side of the slide closest to my body, and on the tip of the barrell which became completely rusted over. Glock repaired the slide and I paid to have the barrel replaced as it wasn't repairable. The G43 spends it's time in a Blackpoint Tactical kydex Leather Wing OWB. While I like the holsters fit, the Kydex isn't open at the bottom and thus moisture from me, humidity, and since I carry it on the motorcycle, possible rain can be held in the bottom, I think that's what ultimately got the barrel end. Obviously a bit more care on the EDC is in order so, how often do you care for yours, and what do you use. Thinking a wipe down with an oiled rag on the exterior is a must, and removing it from the holster so it can air dry might be a good idea, This would be done weekly and after every day carried, since with corona I'm not out everyday with the EDC. What products do you find best, I generally spray down a rag with CLP lube/cleaner, since it hasn't been fired, and wipe down the firearm.

I generally just shoot my EDC P365 every couple of months, then field strip it, clean, and lube it. No problems so far with it, but it hasn't been exposed to rain, mud, or sand in between shooting. If it were, it would get cleaned right after such exposure. ____________________________ NRA Life Member, Annual Member GOA, MGO Annual Member

99% of the time I wipe my pistols down with a silicone gun rag/cloth before I put them back in the safe. Never had an issue with rust on any of my carry guns.(I'm in AL, so similar heat/humidity.) So yes, removing it from the holster and giving it a wipe down after you carry is probably a good idea.

Silicone gun cloth daily to remove dust and any other contaminant, especially during monsoon summers in AZ.

Anytime I handle a gun/carry a gun/mag etc. it gets wiped down with a rag impregnated with oil (ballistol generally). Not a soaked dripping wet rag just one that has seen a lot of cleaning/ballistol use. Never a problem. "Guns are tools. The only weapon ever created was man."

My G19 has a lot of wear on it from the kydex holster. But I only clean it if it’s gotten wet, or was shot. I can’t ever remember wiping it down. I shoot it Every other monthl and it gets cleaned maybe every other time.. a box of rounds thru it doesn’t necessarily mean it needs cleaning... When I carried a gun for work, it never just got wiped down. If it was raining that day, the gun got completely taken apart and cleaned and oiled (P226 in 357 SIG) If I shot it, it got completely cleaned and oiled. But the safari land Triple retention holster Didn’t put much wear on it. "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A. Just another option if you haven't purchased already, Wilson Combat silicone cleaning cloth for about the same cost Regards, Will G.

The silicone cloths that TGS sells are the largest and longest lasting of any that I've used. And the price is very reasonable. Buy extras as that may change.

I keep a stash of Top Gun Supply’s silicone-treated cloths handy. I generally wipe down an EDC gun daily, at the end of the day when I unholster it for the evening / overnight. I also keep a silicone cloth in my vehicle on the chance that I’ve sweated so much that a mid-day wipe-down might be in order. Wipe down with Ezzox--once every 2 weeks, let it dry. No rust. Same goes for my knife.

I have used Birchwod Casey Barricade for many years, even when it was called Sheath. Never had an issue with rust on any of my carry Glocks. WJR

Same here I swear by Eezox. I remember a couple years ago on another site someone did a test with all the different kinds of CLP etc and pieces of metal exposed to the elements for weeks. Eezox came out on top. "Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can't Lose."

I don't take mine out of the kydex holster its in for long periods. that in and out move is actually the biggest risk I would have of an ND and its not necessary in my use IMO. And I have never had any issue of rust or corrosion. But I have an RMR on it and I do clean the lint out of that every night, since it seems to grow by itself. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

I need to do mine more often. My P320SC rides on my ankle at work, and especially in our hot humid summers, that method of carry is hard on it. I probably clean it every other week or so on slow nights, but it collects a lot of lint, and I've had rust spots in the bore, and on the mag release. My old Gen 3 G26 went through the same treatment, but never had that problem.

Once upon a time my practice was a simple wipe down with a microfiber and M-Pro7 after each range visit; At least 50rds each time out. Field strip and clean after about every 5th or 6th trip. System worked pretty well for my EDC when I was going shooting 1 or 2 times a week. The past couple of years the visits have been down; now shoot about once every three weeks on average. The amount of rounds shot is generally up; typically 100rds and up to 150rds of 40S&W if I can shoot through the pain in my strong elbow, which admittedly is getting harder to do. Field strip about every other trip. I try to remember to wipe down the G23 at least once a week, but without the weekly range trips I too often forget. After a couple of weeks of carrying there's a noticeable buildup of dust and lint; that's enough to break out the microfiber cloth...most of the time. -MG
