That’s actually strangely appealing.

Of the many guns I’ve owned and gotten rid of, one of the few I somewhat regret no longer having was a model 25 in 45 ACP/Auto Rim. As the recreation of an old classic it would also help answer the question of how proficient could one become with such weapons—not that it would be very different from any other revolver in practice, but it would be the one to take to a sword fight. It would of course require open carry in a flap top holster while wearing a brown fedora. Wink

So they’re doing the opposite of Ruger.

Pretty cool.

My wife wants an old model 10 or similar because it reminds her of what her dad used to carry around their farm. Maybe I can sneak this in for that!

They sure are. For instance, instead of losing control to another company (Beretta owns 25% of Ruger), S&W just bought Savage Arms outright.

I have no practical need for one of these, but I really want one!

Ruger and S&W are both publicly traded, no?

So, I was just googling/following up regarding what the SW Rep stated in regards to pistol issue in WW1.

One of the first links that popped up was SW Model 22 Classic. S&W website states it retails for 1299. I would really like on but not for that since it would be more for plinking.

I wonder if they will eventually offer different calibers like in the past with the 1917.

According to Guns And Ammo (July 2016)
In 1915 and 1916, Smith & Wesson had made almost 75,000 of its high-quality Second Model Hand Ejector double-action revolvers in .455 for Britain and Canada. In anticipation of America's involvement in the war, the factory, under the guidance of S&W President Joseph Wesson, stepped up existing experimentation on a similar arm to handle the U.S. service .45 ACP round.

Civilian calibers included .44 S&W Special, .38-40, .44-40 and .45 Colt, with barrel-length options of four, five, six and 6½ inches. Either blued or nickel-plated finishes were offered, and grips were checkered walnut with S&W logo escutcheons

Interesting.

I have one of the old Thunder Ranch S&Ws in .45 ACP, and found the old half moon sight just isn't always very clearly visible. Apparently S&W has heard that before considering that they put a ramp front sight on the .45 ACP/Colt.

As for the .45 ACP/Colt, you can't use auto rim or existing clips, and the old Ruger convertibles were apparently at their best with adjustable sights to account for differences in point of impact between the ACP and the Colt. Maybe the combo is better seen as an ACP or a Colt, depending on which corresponds better to the existing sights?

It will be interesting to see if these models take off and stay a regular catalog item. An M-22 in .44 Special offering would tempt me to search one.

That would be a Model 21 technically. But I see what you're saying. I guess your theoretical one wouldn't have a shrouded ejector? Either way it would be cool. they made a 21-4 Thunder Ranch special a couple decades back but it didn't sell of course. Nothing cool sells anymore LOL

Silly question, but of the model 22 does use moon clips or accept auto rim, what does the 45 ACP round headspace on?

Apparently I am confused. The S&W site says the 22 accepts both cartridges, and accepts moon clips. There is no mention of auto-rim. I've very interested in this model, as I have a couple of thousand auto-rim cases, new in the box, I bought years ago. Also, there is a company in CA that makes moon clips out of polymer. They worked great in my 625, and don't cut your fingers. I also have the de-mooning tool, IIRC. I am excited.

I am confused by the first part of your question, but without the use of clips, a 45 ACP cartridge would headspace in the cylinder on a step that the cartridge mouth contacts. That is how rimless cartridges like the 9mm Luger headspace in autoloading pistol barrels.

I would bet a nickel or two that the guns would accept Auto Rim cases. My understanding is that the Auto Rim case was designed to work in revolvers that fired the 45 ACP cartridge but without the need for clips to permit ejection by the extractor rod. If this revolver works with clips I can not imagine it wouldn’t work with Auto Rim cases. I suspect that the AR case isn’t mentioned because of how rare it is these days.

Added: According to Wikipedia, original model 22 revolvers worked with 45 Auto Rim cartridges. Also according to the 'net, only a few manufacturers produce that ammunition today.

I have a Thunder Ranch Model 22, really cool, fun gun to shoot.
Would love to have both of these, but not unless they fix their QC issues. This has stopped me from buying anything S&W. My brother had a J frame years ago, had to go back twice I think, he doesn't carry it...which was the point of having it, and doesn't feel right selling it because it still doesn't work 100%.
With the new again Night Guard, I was hoping they're bring back the .45 ACP to that, but...again, nothing cool sells anymore.
