Three on, one off |
I carry this model 340 most of the time in the summer months. Loaded with Federal or whatever 125 grain JHP I can find, plus a speed strip. This message has been edited. Last edited by: G-Man,

I carried a 642 as a back up gun on duty and often as a primary off duty for more than a decade. I've still got a 637 I'll toss in my pocket (in a pocket holster) if I just need to run to the store and don't feel like digging out something bigger and a belt holster. It's not state of the art, but 5 rounds of .38 is every bit as effective as it always has been. More so with the development of loads that actually penetrate and expand at snubby velocities.

I know this thread is older..but does anyone know who makes this holster? It looks like it is a combination pocket/IWB holster. I just got a nice 642 and looking for options. Thanks

Thanks for reviving this tread because I meant to reply to it earlier. While I love my P365s, for me, nothing carrys like a J-frame. For the last several years, 90% of the time, I carry a 360 chambered in 357. I had the cylinder cut for moon clips (primarily to ensure ejection if it ever comes to that), installed a FO front sight and factory bobbed hammer. Finally I appendix carry it using a Techna Clip. It eats the Federal rounds with Barnes 140gr copper expander bullets. I put nice Hogues on it, but something in those grips caused a rash on my skin so I went back to the factory rubber grips. I picked up a 642 in the early 90s, as it was at that time the best package for concealing in scrubs: we were expecting the birth of my daughter and it was part of my get-to-the hospital kit, and I recall carrying it to Lamaze classes. It then saw ankle and pocket carry as a BUG. I occasionally still carry it, mainly for nostalgia. I ALWAYS carry spare ammo regardless of what system I'm carrying. For the J-Frame I used a lot of Speed Strips carried in pockets, though I now use Zeta strips and loaders.

Ruger LCR is close enough to a J-frame, in my view. Mine is a .327 Fed. Mag. model, which is six shots (instead of five shots on the .38/357 models). Loaded with the firecracker-hot Speer Gold Dots that are 1,500fps out of a 4" barrel (about 1,200fps in a LCR), and pushing 500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Two speed strips for reloads, one with the Gold Dots and the other with some Federal Hydra-Shoks. Pocket holster on occasion, Smart Carry for when "I don't have a gun"; a Blackpoint Tactical OWB holster is being made for it, right now. I really like this setup.

I’ve often fancied the idea of getting a Ruger (either SP101 or LCR) in 327 but have yet to do it. Someday… Regards, Waco Learning from my mistakes since 1974...

When I started my journey in law enforcement, all we were allowed to carry were revolvers (I'm not THAT old) so I carried a couple J frames as the years went on. Sold most of them but still have the Charter Arms Undercover I bought mainly because it was the lightest revolver I owned and would shoot 125 JHP's into a small circle at reasonable distances. That gun is now my Florida gun. Sits at my buddies house for when I visit every so often. Always a speed strip in the watch pocket, but that's mainly because I'd rather have it and not need it, than the reverse.

This is a nice model 38 Z06. I was issued a model 38 with a stainless steel cylinder in 1966 when I was a new Trooper with the Michigan State Police. We carried them in the right front pocket of our uniform pants in a sewn in holster. The stainless cylinder was special order for our department only as far as I know. This is a photo from the web and not my gun. I kept mine when I retired and later gave it to my daughter who is also a retired MSP Trooper. These model 38 S&W revolvers were also carried off duty since department orders required us to be armed at all times. I was a detective for 15 years and carried this as my primary weapon as most of the detectives did. These guns did stretch over time and would throw lead on the person shooting next to you on the range. We would then turn them in for a new one when that happened. This problem was caused by the 60’s era metallurgy as well as the hot ammo we were issued. My daughter does not plan to shoot this model 38 but will carry and shoot a new model 442-1. This 442-1 is a much better gun than our old model 38’s. In spite of that, most retired officers near and in Michigan try to buy one of these at one time or another. If you come across an old MSP model 38 with that stainless cylinder, buy it and put it on display with an MSP patch. Then buy 442-1 (with new metallurgy and rated for +P). I'm not laughing WITH you |
I have at times but now carry my Kimber K6s. 3", .357. The reload depends on my thread expectation. I have a around the belt holder for a Speed Beez reloader, or a Speed Strip that buckles around my belt. Kimber K6s 1 jpg by Dave Steier, on Flickr Rolan Kraps SASS Regulator Gainesville, Georgia. I try to carry my P365, but there are times when a J frame is easier to carry. I have a 360J that I put a bobbed hammer on for pocket carry.

Used to, as a primary, way back in the Seventies. M60 2", tuned action, FBI loads, IWB. Still carry as a BUG in a LH Kramer Leather high ride holster. Have had several 2" and 3" J-frames over the decades. If I were to carry as a primary, it would be the 3" heavy barrel. Huge difference in shootability between the two, plus better extraction. ______________________ An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less until he knows absolutely everything about nothing. --Nicholas Murray Butler

Like you, I studied it for a long time before finally acquiring one. It truly is a fantastic caliber/gun setup.
