Sig P6 ammunition question Login/Join

Good evening.
I have a Sig P6 that runs like a Rolex, as long as I feed it ball ammo. I've tried several different hp's, but to no avail.
I'd love to carry it, but won't because of the ball ammo restriction.
It will feed the Corbon p'wer ball, and Glaser.
Has anyone here in the hive ever tried Critical Defense ammo in place of ball.... Will it feed?

Sort of an odd question, but perhaps someone else here has had the same problem.

Or, is there a Smith that can remedy this?

Thanks in advance for your time.

Your P6 must have the original feed ramp that was designed for ball ammo. Hollow points are a known issue for the gun.

My circa 1980 P-6 runs like a sewing machine on 135 grain Hornady Critical Duty. (Yes, it's had a ramp job.)
That's been my carry load for several years now in a variety of 9mm pistols.
Highly recommended!

What to check on the P6 feed ramp and if it’s not updated, what does it take?

Home gamer job or professional?

This is what I found works in my P6 yours may be different.
It is called Inceptor Preferred Defense Ammunition 9mm Luger 65 Grain ARX Lead-Free. I bought it when it was made or marketed by Ruger.
The bullet looks like a drill bit and is a combination of some sort of polymer.
I bought it from Midway USA a few years ago.
Just make sure the ones you look for are not +p rounds because I am not sure if the P6 is rated for +p or +p+.

Similar to ARX, check out ammo loaded w/ Lehigh Defense's Xtreme Defense & Xtreme Penetrator bullet. Underwood comes highly recommended for a variety of calibers, weights, & powder loads using those bullets.

Apparently, Sig at some point made a change on the feed ramp of the P6 or 225. If you Google P6 or 225 feed ramps you will find sites that address this issue as well as picture showing the feed ramps that do not feed HP's and the one's that do. My P6 ( which I purchased from a member here) has the newer feed ramp and has never failed to feed the ammunition. It's an oldergun, I think made in the late 80's IIRC. I carry HST 147 grain in it.

My P6 without modifications 1983 date likes Federal 9BP hollow point ammo and feeds reliably for me.
Some have reported that Remington Golden Sabre work also.
This question has been asked before and someone may be able to find the old thread.

Thanks.
I had done a search before asking.
The consensus is that 9b is a good thing.
I'll have to get some and give it a try.

Thanks all.

My 1980 model didn't like hollow points. Had to have the feedramp modified.

I don't remember when this was posted:

At one time there were several members/vendors here that could make the modification, but I've not seen it mentioned in a while. You can also look into an aftermarket or later production replacement barrel, which show up from time to time on various sites.

Yes, it used to get discussed here regularly, and I am surprised it wasn’t mentioned before.

If I wanted the mod I would contact the gunsmiths such as Grayguns that are known for their work on SIG pistols.

If I didn’t want the expense or effort of having the barrel modified, I’d try a load like the Federal 9BPLE that has a smaller hollow point and whose bullets have more of an FMJ profile. Modern defensive ammunition tends to have much larger hollow point cavities and older guns weren’t designed for those styles.

Similarly, my KT P11 wouldnt reliably feed Hydrashok JHPs, too big of a 'mouth' & they would hang on the feed ramp.
Switched to Hornady Critical Defense, which has a sharper taper & never had a feed issue with them.

Might be worth trying something like that before sending it off for modification.

I have a 1979 P6 that wouldn't feed hollow points, or even the fancy efmj ammo, or hornady critical duty. The flat face of the rounds would hang up on the pronounced lip at the bottom of the feed ramp.

Thankfully, I've had that gun long enough that P225 barrels were still pretty readily available when I discovered the problem, so I ordered one, and that solved the issue. I used to have a pic somewhere of both of them for a thread that I'd posted here back in the old days, but I think that hosting service has long since nuked itself. I still have my original barrel (it's serialized to the gun), but everybody else in the house is asleep and I can't get to it without waking people up. If I get a chance I'll snap a pic tomorrow and post it up here. Looking at them side by side, it's very clear what the issue is.

I know others have had success polishing the older style feed ramps down, and it doesn't look like it would be that difficult of a job. Personally, though, I'm well aware of my ability to screw stuff up so I like to have a replacement (sacrificial) part in-hand before I start removing material.

If another P225 barrel isn't in the cards: I remember reading on another forum a few years ago about someone making a threaded P6/P225 barrel using a donor P226 barrel. I recall it was a DIY job and that this fellow did have some machining skills. There apparently have been others who have also done similar starting with a P226 barrel. Probably won't be cheap if a qualified gunsmith were to replicate this, but it seems like it's one viable option to keep your original P6 barrel intact if workable HPs aren't around.

Here's some photos. Sorry for the crummy lighting. P6 Barrel on the left, P225 Barrel on the right. I have done nothing to either of these, this is the way that I received them.

Not only does the P225 Barrel have less of a lip at the base of the feed ramp, it also has a bevel cut on the base of the hood above the chamber, while the P6 barrel is basically 90 degrees in that area.
