Are they THAT good or is it just a supply and demand thing at this point?

Thought about looking for one but prices seem to have jumped 30% since last time I looked.

It's probably my favorite pistol of all time. However, there are "bigger and better" things out there and a lot of people don't gel with the squeeze-cocker (you won't know until you try).

So I'd say it's mainly a supply/demand thing these days, as the various YouTube channels have just discovered it and done a good job hyping it up for viewership. It used to be a somewhat obscure pistol known only to gun guys' gun guys. Now, everyone and their mom knows about the P7. It isn't the only such occurrence.

Original HK P7's went out of production 45 years ago. Very similar to Colt Pythons.
P7 Pro out of Texas has begun production of the P7 again. Prices start at $2,600.
Hogue recently introduced wooden grip panels for the HK P7--demand is out there for a P7.

I can't say they are "THAT" good. They have never been my first choice but I do know they are cool as hell and I can see why lots of folks like them and are willing to pay top dollar.

Paired with Karl Nills grips, P7s are wonderful pistols. They just ‘feel’ right when carrying and shooting them. They do heat up quickly though.

If you can find one under $2k it would be worth snagging it. If you find that you really do not like it, you won’t lose money…as stated, demand is healthy for P7s. If you do not appreciate the history and engineering behind the P7, or the unique squeeze cocker, you may be disappointed spending that much on a single-stack 8-round 9mm steel handgun.

I love them. Are they some “bestest ever!!! gun? Absolutely not. They shoot amazingly well because of the trigger, gas system, fixed barrel etc. they are extremely safe IMO. None of that makes them some great “weapon” in the modern world. Heavy, low capacity, expensive, weird etc.

What they are, however, is THE quintessential gun geek gun.

-Rare check
-Expensive check
-Mythical reputation check
-Extremely unique manual of arms check
-Built by a company with a mythical rep. Check
-Able to actually write practical checks the legendary rep writes check

It’s just a fantastic mix of still a practical firearm mixed with legendary attributes. It’s an awesome gun geek gun in every way IMO.

If you think prices are outrageous for P225 magazines, wait until you shop for P7 magazines!

I had a P7, and later bought a P7M8. Both boringly reliable, and both demonstrated SIG P210 type accuracy shooting from the bench. Ken Hackathorn once described the P7s as the "Porsche of pistols." I stumbled into a sweet deal on a P7M8 many years ago.
Was it a nice pistol? Yes it was.
I traded it away after several years to a well known Forum Member down south.
In LEO duty / service usage where that was the only handgun you used and trained & practiced with, it would be fine.

I use a wide variety of handgun types. Many revolvers, 1911's, 2011's, multiple makers of DA/SA type. And at least one DAO.
I didn't want to die because I forgot to squeeze the squeeze cocker in a adrenaline rush self defense situation.
I know my limitations.
It would have been OK to keep it, as a collectable, or a range toy.
I really haven't missed the P7M8.

If I won the Mega Millions lottery, I probably would buy at least one of the new production P7 Pro type, and of course with the titanium frame because I am a "metals" nerd.

Then you want the P7M13 13 round version. If 9mm doesn't work for you then the P7M10 in .40, but those are rare (and really weird looking).

It depends on what you think “good” is. They are special. I have owned many, many P7s. Several truly rare ones, and a few of the PD trades back in the day. I loved the high workmanship and machining that went into them, and I still believe they are one of the most inherently safe pistols one could own when carrying with one in the hole. That said..

They are too damn heavy to carry (my opinion — and remember, I love them). They are quite a compromise in capacity. But they are stupid accurate. And they are and always will be (IMO) very, very cool.

What something is worth is always subjective. But I have never lost a dime on a P7. Like the “expensive watches” thread, if you know what you’re doing and buy condition and quality, and don’t over pay, you can do well even if you decide to sell one day.

I love P7s. I do not own one now, and I’ll never own another. My carry gun is currently an Sig 938 Legion. A little less capacity, a lot less weight, a lot less money, a lot more concealable.

Love them and I've owned many. When prices started heading well north, I sold off my excess to reinvest in my collection.

Still have an M8 and M13 that aren't going anywhere. The M8 I bought new in 2003, so I've owned it 23 years. The M13 I got from my importing partner. The "AA" date code is rare, because they weren't being imported during the magazine ban.

I think delayed blowback pistols of all kinds are some of the most interesting pistols in the world.

Are they that good?

Back in the early-mid 90s, I owned a couple of P7M8s and my wife owned one too. They were good firearms, but both of us moved on from them.

Do I miss them, simply no.
So my answer, yep they are good, but not necessarily "that good" as far as I am concerned. Just my opinion, since you asked.

I was first made aware of P7s not long after I'd become interested in hand guns and I decided I'd buy one even though it'd cost around $1,200. No gun stores around here had one but I found a dealer near Berkley Springs WV who said he goes over to VA to pick up guns from HK and he'd get me one.

This was around 1990 IIRC and he told me they were just in very short supply as HK worked to fill a contract for them to some agency in NY or NJ. As weeks turned into months all the time me pestering him, he called saying he finally found one and forwarded an Email from an employee at HK offering to sell one he had that was NIB and somewhat unique. It would go through the Berkley Springs dealer for a price to me of $1,300. HK USA had ordered a batch of 100 with a phosphate finish for the DC Park police when they only required 97 and the employee had purchased one of the 3 left over. I went ahead and purchased it.

Early 2000 I stumbled on some HK P7 site where there was a discussion of the unique Park Police phosphate model and there were only 3 that were known to be in private hands so would probably bring a nice premium over a new one which were still being manufactured. I don't believe HK stopped production until 2006 or so. I recalling posting here about it at that time along with some images.


Around 2012 and out of the blue I received an Email from an unknown sender asking if I still had the P7 Park Police and if so would I be interested in selling it?

I replied yes I have it and no, not interested in selling it and how'd you know I had it?

He said he found where I'd posted it on the forum here years back. Then asked "what about trading? I'll give you a new Glock (any one you want) and $500."

I said no I don't need a Glock but thanks.

He said "if not a Glock what pistol would you want"?

I thought for a minute.... I had just read that Sig had bought over some P210 Legend Super Targets made at their Master Shop in Germany, priced around $4,500. I said "Well OK make it a Sig P210 Super Target."

He emailed back "give me your FFL information and your address". An hour later he emailed "your Super Target will go out to your FFL tomorrow coming from Rocco in Texas which is the only place in the country I could find that had one. After it arrives here's my FFL where to send the P7M8 Park Police. Then said "that P210 was a lot more expensive gun than I was wanting to trade for your P7 so can we forget the $500"?

I said "oh no I sorry I was counting on the $500 also."

He said "OK it'll go out today to your address".

Two days later I picked up the P210 at my FFL and a $500 money order came in the mail to my house. And I still had my P7M8. Consider I never met the person or even spoke with him on the phone it was all done via Email, this was the strangest transaction I've ever done.

The following day I packed up my P7 Park Police and shipped it off through my FFL to his and Emailed to let him know.

I possibly made a poor decision but whatever it's water over the dam and I had a couple other P7M8's by that time. And the Super Target is a beautiful pistol.

Not sure how many people are buying them because they're great carry options these days. They buy them for nostalgia, uniqueness, and high quality.

New in wrap P7 mags are out there. Only $110 or so.

The M8 grips will function on a PSP-style P7, but they won’t be an exact contour match, depending on which iteration of the heel magazine release latch you have.

Mine has the later (wider) release latch.
