Is this a first for Turkish guns and US police departments?

I gotta think so. I also think this is a silly choice guided by an “individual” rather a reasoned choice.

I have never procured weapons for a unit of any kind. Buying a Glock/Walther clone made in Turkey seems like a problem just waiting to happen.

Who makes holsters for this? Maybe everybody but I doubt it.

If I had to guess the Galveston PD were basically gifted these guns and whoever is the head of procurement got a bunch of free dinners for the advertising alone. That being said, most people seem to love these guns at a very inexpensive price.

I somehow doubt there aren’t better choices out there.

Most reviews of the SAR-9 that I've read have been positive. It's apparently the Turkish Army's sidearm (or one of them, at least).

Very interesting... I wonder where they're sourcing their duty holsters?

Galveston PD has about 100 Officers…

“We are very happy that the SAR9 SOCOM was selected as one of the five duty weapons of the Texas police department…”

So. Maybe 20 Officers are carrying them?

Not exactly the same as Dallas or Texas DPS adopting them.

Since everything rusts along the Texas gulf coast, I suppose a cheap gun may be appealing.

If that’s a proper thumb safety I see, as an old 1911 carrier, I would appreciate that on a duty gun.

$179. Wow. So does “one of five” approved firearms mean that the individual officer just buys their own? So potentially no one is carrying one or all one hundred or somewhere in between? It’s good to have an inexpensive choice. He’ll, maybe the maintenance cycle consists of handing you a brand new gun if yours breaks. At 179 it is cheaper to buy a second gun than to keep spare parts

The SAR-9 kinda looks like they stuck the top half of a Glock onto the bottom half of an HK. Saves a lot of development effort that way.

Yes, but the Turkish gun apparently doesn't have the P320's issues.

The SOCOM is more expensive than the basic SAR9, but has the same "DNA."

$529 at PSA.

I saw a ton of those in duty holsters when we were in Istanbul back in September. I didn't know what they were and had to look them up. Glock copies are apparently quite popular overseas now (Spanish cops were carrying an Israeli made version) so it's really not that crazy of an idea. Didn't WV State Police just adopt Shadow Systems as their new duty pistol? Kind of the opposite end of the Glock clone spectrum to be sure, but at the end of the day they're all basically Glocks. I imagine getting support from a US company like Shadow Systems is probably easier, but who cares about support when a new gun is $179?

Apparently they each get 3 pistols as in the photos there are two different ones with one officer and 3 pistols. One with them boxed under his arm and the other a sergeant with them on a table.

I’m pretty sure that’s just “handing them out day” at Galveston PD…

That is not the correct model.
This is and is $529

Still an interesting choice.

Quick search says 145 full-time officers

Compared to Houston PD's 5,260 sworn officers

The Enemy's gate is down.

Name a department that makes a weird choice to issue a gun that’s around in three years.

It was big news when OST started using the Zev Tech OZ9. Now they are back to Glocks.
