So, pardon if I missed it... but what does the solid guide rod do to improve the gun and one's shooting?

I was weighing the slides with barrels and guide rods and springs on several of my pistols, and two that were supposed to be exactly the same did not weigh the same... discovered one had a solid guide rod.
