The steel framed Kahr pistols are great for new shooters; not too small, not too big, smooth double action trigger, enough weight to handle recoil, no safeties or decockers to worry about.

Do be sure to include the S&W 380 EZ. Has a big plus for smaller/lighter people. One competitor bought at least 6 of them and gave one to every female in his extended family. The women loved them. Do let us know what gets selected and how it worked out.
