Sold all my .38 J's sans my Chiefs Special. Now I have a 632UC & 432UC. Love the 32 Magnum!

Can't go wrong with a DCM prefix 642 without the stupid ILS! I carry one more than anything else.

A 5 shot J-frame has been with me almost every day of my life since 1980

Often as my BUG, but in recent years as my primary defensive firearm

My favorite for carry is the Model 340. The Scandium alloy frame makes it great for pocket carry.

However if you have a good holster on your belt or a quality ankle holster, then the steel framed Model 640s are a pleasure to shoot.

Now the various Chiefs Special Targets also holster carry very nice and with their improved sights, long shots are easy. Yes I Love that Shark Fin front sight

My favorite for BBQs is my Model 649

However if weight is not an issue, it is hard to beat a steel framed Model 640

Weight isn't an issue. 3" SS .327 Fed Mag SP101 or 2.5" SS .357 Mag GP100. Both pocket carry in a Mika holster in Tru-Spec original cargo pants cargo pocket. I cheat a little since my favorite has either 6 (SP101) or 7 (GP100) shots.

My favorite is my only five shot, my S&W 642 with Crimson Trace grips. Although lately I have been eyeing the new S&W model 396 Night Guard. Five shots of 44 special. It looks intriguing. Smile

Looks like my Model 36 Chief’s Special circa 1959. It came into the store I work at as a purchase. Grips are numbered to the gun, looks to have been carried more than fired.

It gets carried here and there when I’m not in a Sig mood.

Thank you for the kind word.

It was my luckiest deal ever and I am over proud of it and I do like telling the story Smile

In my college days I helped in my Uncle's Gun Shop & Range. I made friends with all the Pawn Shop guys around the shop. Deals they did not want to shell out enough money for or the firearms they knew I liked would have them calling me.

25+ years later I get a phone call from one of these old buddies that now works at a Pawn Shop in Gainesville , YES Gainesville (I lived in Ft Lauderdale)

An older couple walked into the pawn shop. They had a Smith & Wesson 649 that was purchased new in 1985. After purchasing their new 649, it was loaded and placed in a drawer and never touched since. They never even fired it. Now they are at an age where they want to sell it. It turned out that they were movinto "Assisted Living" and there was a No Firearms policy.

The revolver was engraved when they purchased it and they were told it was received that way from the factory. They did not have the box or anything else so there was no quick way to determine if this was a Factory job or aftermarket. But I liked the way it looked and the price we worked out was perfectly fine even if it turned out to be non-factory.

The couple was happy with what the shop offered. I was happy with the deal I worked out. I even mailed a check to the shop that day. In Florida,
I had to wait 30 days for a serial number check (FL pawn shop law). I even mailed in my Historical letter request that same day

What I learned when the letter arrived thrilled me. This was a FACTORY engraved firearm. More than that, this is the 39th Model 649 produced.

What happened is that on the first day of Model 649 production. 25 of the 43 revolvers between serial numbers AFN0016 and AFN0058 were specially hand selected for A+ Engraving, Mine additionally had the African Elephant Ivory grips.

These 25 revolvers were created to pay homage to the introduction of the Stainless Steel Bodyguard Model 649 which occured in 1985. This is why 1985 is engraved on the side-plate

The Model 649 manufacturing actually began late in 1984 that way inventory would be ready to ship when the revolver was announced in 1985 at the SHOT Show

I doubt a revolver deal like that will appear in my sights again.

It looks like a crack from up mid-point of the hammer spur curving downward toward the 4 o'clock direction just cutting through the top edge of the flower and ending just before the cylinder shield. What is that?

Colt, not only is that a cool gun, but a cool story behind it! The minute i was reading your post, I vaguely remembered that S&W had some factory engraved guns. Looking at yours, he did some really nice work!
I am a total sucker for case hardening and good, old school engraving!
One of these days, I need to get one of mine engraved.

LDB-
That’s a gap between the frame and the side plate.

Remove the grip, remove that screws at the bottom of the frame, and now you have access to the internal parts.
Look at the screw just behind the trigger, you’ll see another slight gap there.

I used to have an airweight 642, but it was brutal to shoot so I got rid of it. Now I have a 36 that does just occasional pocket duty for quick trips to the gas station.

That’s the edge of the side plate - it’s how they are built. Totally normal.

Not as nice as colt_saa's but similar in shape! Plus a lot lighter. 638 Airweight. My most carried simply because I can throw it in pocket when I go for walks with dogs. Won't drag my shorts or sweat pants down either.
