I have a vintage series one. I will never sell it. I know the original owner and he had zero problems and neither have I.

RogueSK, very nice summary of the current 1911 market.

I'm an old guy. When I started shooting, you could buy any 1911 you wanted...as long as it was a Colt.

A ton of WWII surplus military available then as well.

I had a full size CDP a few years back and the hammer would follow the slide down , sent back , also a Custom Tac 2 that jammed all the time I tried new mags ,springs etc, sold them. I have a Warrior I got new the week it was out years ago never a problem . the finish is all worn off but its been good to go . I look at how nice the new ones are and I`am tempted to get the Ultra Carry with lazier grip . A lot of good reports here .

A friend of mine had a Kimber 45 and kept getting brass to the face. He sent it in to Kimber and it still did it. He knicked a couple of prescription eyeglasses with it and eventually sold it.

We sell probably 24 a year. We don't sell as many as we could because we often get the high end ones. Kimber has an odd distribution method, having to do with minimum purchases. IMHO, the plainer versions are preferable. I don't like a lot of crap on my 1911's, good sights and that's about it.

In the end I decided to give Kimber a pass.

But then I turned around and bought a Remington R1 Enhanced, so what does that say of my judgement? Big Grin

How does the R1 run?

For a long time, I also had reservations about Kimber due to all the threads about hit-or-miss QC that are out there. Then I held a Stainless II Target LS in .45ACP. For the price, it looked like a heckuva deal. Threw caution to the wind and bought it and have been extremely satisfied with it. Performance has been flawless and accuracy is excellent. It is one of my very favorite range guns.

I purchased a CDP II around 5 years ago. It had a few FTFs during the first couple hundred rounds. Since then, it operates flawlessly. I would guess 1000 rounds fired at least. I did pickup some Wilson Combat mags and no issues after that....While I do like the gun, part of me has some regret for not spending just a little more for a Dan Wesson. I will say this gun has a nice trigger and shoots very well.....

FWIW...According to (Retired) Lt Joe Kenda from the Colorado Springs Homicide Dept. The Kimber 1911 was the gun that he carried and claimed it was the most accurate gun he ever used.

I've got a series 1, one of the very first stainless 1911's they produced. My first 1911 and even has the idiot mark that I put on it. It has been absolutely flawless. I also had an Ultra Carry II in .45ACP that had issues. From the very beginning it was not reliable. Had my smith look at it and discovered that the factory installed a 9mm extractor in it. Changed the extractor and it was reliable with hardball and not hollow points. Not what I was looking for in a carry gun.

I have had a few Kimbers even an Equinox with an external extractor that functioned fine until it was stolen from the gunshop it was in for some mods. My Raptor served me well as a competition gun in USPSA Limited 10. A 9mm is a fun one to shoot and very accurate and reliable.

The only issues I have had were with JHPs. Now a pro shooter once told me JHPs were slightly more accurate so I was going to shoot them no matter what. Reloading my own there was no big price difference. Stronger springs ( Wolfe )in my Wilson mags helped solve the problem.

I've had a Kimber Custom I bought since they were soon out. My guess is back in the early 90's. It has been flawless from the day I took it out of the box, even with my reloads! Big Grin

Recently purchased a Kimber "Hero" model at an unbelievable low price (new). That one has about 900 rounds through it and is reliable and accurate.

I've also shot a Les Baer Custom. Nice gun but had some issues with ammo feeding. For this particular gun, I think the chamber was tight. Enough so that factory ammo standard tolerances caused the problems as the rounds chambered in other .45s.

Being a part-time RSO, I see and hear a lot and if I were to look for a $1500.00 or less 1911 today, I'd be looking hard & fast at the Springfield or Sig 1911 lines.

If you have $1500 or less to spend on a 1911, a Dan Wesson is a noticeable step up in quality from a Springfield, Sig, or Kimber. They clearly dominate the $1000ish-$1500ish 1911 market.

There's roughly four "tiers" of 1911 manufacturers:

The $500ish Philippine guns (Armscor, Rock Island, Citadel, etc.)

The $600-$1000ish mass-produced factory guns (Colt, S&W, Ruger, Springfield, Kimber).

The $1000ish-$2000ish semi-custom makers (Dan Wesson, Fusion, etc.)

The $2000-$5000+ customs (Les Baer, Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, etc.)

There are some that blur the lines between these, like the higher end Colt Custom Shop guns, or the entry level Les Baers.

But while (for example) you can find some Kimbers for $1000+, or some Springfield Customs for ~$3000, the better option is almost always to move up to something from that upper tier.

There’s a fifth tier. $5,000-10,000. Heirloom Precision.

I have a kimber warrior that I’ve had for ~ 15 years. It’s never skipped a beat, it must have 5k rounds through it at this point, not a lot compared to some people but like I said, it’s never skipped a beat.

This is completely subjective and I honestly can't point to one thing specific I dislike, but I'm not a Kimber fan.

I have a Pro Carry II that I can't warm up to. I was a tad miffed the mainspring housing appeared to be plastic. I replaced it with a Wilson Combat stainless one. It's bushingless, so maybe that's it, I dunno. Of my 4 Commanders, it's my least favorite.

Oh, and a big shout out to Cummings Custom Refinishing. I didn't like the Kimber bluing (and some scratches the guy who put the sights on left behind) so I sent it to CCR for the Dusk finish. When I got it back, while cool, I felt the Dusk was just too blingy, so I asked CCR if they could redo it. And redo it they did! The House Black Cera-Hide is wonderful looking, feels like it'd survive Armageddon, and what I should have done the first time.

I did own a couple but at my age I gave to my son.
They both ran flawless, some of the most 1911 accurate right out the box.I still some cheap rock Island's 1911 in my home for defense.

Most of the people that say Kimbers are good guns have older ones. The new ones are absolute trash. I've seen dozens of new ones come to my range and they can never get through the first magazine without a problem. A 500 round break in is ridiculous when you pay that much for a gun. Do yourself a favor, look at Springfield, Sig and Dan Wesson. All of them are around the same price point (some being lower) and the quality is much higher (especially the DW Specialists)

Picked it up tonight. Feels great in the hand and honestly for the price it is very well built. We shall see if it’s reliable though even if it gives me a couple bobbles early on, but then smooths out, I’ll be happy.
