This. It would be a much nicer .22 DA revolver than most(if not all) of the new ones out there, and you wouldn't be diminishing the value in any way.

I imported a couple dozen of these over the years from Germany. In decent shape they brought @600-$700. That looks like a good buy. The 17 is fun gun to shoot that will hold value. The 14 is a blast too (38 spl). I also have a mod 16 on the way, rare one in 32 s&w long. Looking forward to shooting that one.

No, definitely not.
That hammer (the "High-Speed" hammer as it was known) is correct for a 1955 serial number.
With the exception of the grips, it looks all correct.
Great find! Shoot that sucker! Smile

It's pretty hard to go wrong at that price for any model 17. The model 18, four inch .22 cal version of the venerable model 15 .38 spl. are both the best .22 revolvers Smith and Wesson made. Had a chance to pick up a 17 years ago and have never regretted it.

Serial number on the cylinder, barrel and under grip all match

I've got a range in my back yard in Clermont. Want to come play?

The era correct grips will be "K-Frame Diamond Magnas" in S&W parlance.

This is my 1958 era Model 18:

You should be able to get a decent pair for around $60 or so.

HRK, Congrats! Let me look around later Saturday. I might have a set of those grips. If I do, I'll make you a deal. I have the target grips for sure (came on the version with the target hammer, and target trigger).

Congrats on your purchase. You've got a fine .22 revolver.

As a side note, you may want to hang on the rubber grips, quite a few folks find them more comfortable to shoot with. Save the K-frame diamond magnas for show off sessions.

HRK, I look through my stash of S&W grips. I have the newer version of the small grips without the diamond, and I have a set of the oversized targets. I will give you the target grips if you'll pay shipping. They're in very good shape (no dents, scratches, or scrapes). They could use a cleaning (Murphy's oil soap works well). Refinish them if you'd like.

Drop me an email if you're interested. ID is in my profile.

Your next trip should be to go buy a lottery ticket but you just may have used up all your luck with that purchase. Great find!

Drop me an email to let me know which set you want, as well as exchanging addresses, etc.

For shotability, the larger target grips are better.
