What caught my eye about the new CMMG conversion kit is that it allows you to use the 5.7 upper on a regular AR lower, and comes with conversion mags that fit a standard mil-spec magwell but hold 40rds of 5.7! Did something like that exist previously?

Aero Precision used to make an AR upper that took the 90 degree rotational PS 90 mag and dumped the empties out of the magwell on your lower. I think capacity on those was 50. It was an awesome product, haven't seen one in awhile.

I remember the upper you describe called the AR57, but don’t remember Aero being the manufacturer. It was a small company, and they lost their machinist or someone a while back and no new uppers have been made since.

I have a couple of these AR57 uppers. take PS90 mags, empties down the magwell. I think it was PWA arms? that made them. but in any case there is no current production that I know of as Dwill104 says.
But I still can't see the attractiveness of the CMMG conversion, I much rather have their AR like product that takes FN mags.

I'd love to see a classic wood and steel bolt action rifle in the round.

If the ammo can come down in price then I can see some expansion into this round. It's a ton of fun to shoot and really the only reason I don't have anything that shoots it is ammo cost.

If the price of ammo doesn’t plummet then it doesn’t matter how great this gun is. It becomes a ridiculously expensive gun for any purpose. I would buy one, but they don’t do ANYTHING well enough to warrant fifty cents a shot for cheap range ammo. That’s retarded.

And of course nobody can do anything about the fact that this is a LONG round. every pistol made for it is going to be big. Just not a masses kind of round. But its a hoot in a ps90 and if prices come down on ammo I'll shoot more. I like the Ruger since it can accept a red dot and that's where I am on pistols these days.

I agree on the high price of the ammo. Why is the ammo so expensive? Does it have to do with the manufacturing process?? I understand supply and demand, but what about the manufacturing costs??

Federal is down to $18-$19 a box of 50. Not great but not awful. It will not be 9mm cheap but nothing else is either.

The problem (at least from my personal experience) is that it is junk. And lots of others have had the same experience. It shouldn't be, but it is.

Kind of like the resurgence for .380 and .22 Mag a number of years ago. Things just have a come back.

Weed legalization has hit the cartels really hard in the wallet so they can't afford the FN pistol anymore so suddenly there was a demand for a cheaper 5.7 pistol...

Hardly. Gold plated AKs are a lot more expensive than FN 5.7.

There will never be any real "surge" in 5.7... You can't have the AP stuff... so it remains little more than a novelty.

Arc.

Well, you can't have the FN factory AP stuff.

This stuff ain't cheap, but, well, have a look:

He's got another video of, IIRC, the same round zipping through a PASGT helmet and gel ballistic head with a skull in slo-mo. Front to back, clean through. Out of a pistol.

These loadings are crazy expensive, and yes, a novelty. But there are civilian loads available that will defeat body armor.

That's just spray paint, don't buy the hype. The cartels are hurting and they can't afford all the Gucci anymore so Ruger is gonna help them out.

I notice the Ruger is on the cover of AR this month... just got delivered this morning.

And the "surge" continues on the AR side... lots of choices.

^^^ I hope the range of pistols increases - or at least that Ruger gets rid of the safety tab in the face of the trigger and simply relies on the thumb safety.
