Everybody on here already knows about the classic P228, with the folded carbon steel slide and alloy frame, represented here. Weighing in at 30 oz, this one feels the most balanced of the four.

Next is the stainless slide alloy frame P228 of the NJSP. SIG NH made this one in 2007 using the Legacy slide of the P229(9). The NJSP were in the middle of the classic P228 contract with SIG at the time, but SIG was in the process of phasing it out. So, SIG came up with this new "P228" for the NJSP to T&E. Only two of these were made. At 32.4 oz, it's still relatively light.

Next is the carbon steel slide stainless frame Afton Arms P228 discussed here.
At 38.1 oz, there is no doubt when you pick it up, even with eyes closed, that this is no longer the classic P228.

Last is the stainless slide stainless frame FrankenP228 that I made by mating the NJSP slide to the frame of the Afton P228. This is a beautiful 40.3 oz brick that I had fun with on July 4th at the range.

Often claims/comparisons regarding balance are made when comparing the P228 to the P229, but I've always wondered, so serious question:

Which one feels the 'Most Balanced' with a fully loaded Magazine? Or are you already taking that into account....

All original grips are the typical plastic ones. I replaced them with these aluminum grips. The top two are Hogue made ones that came off the Elite Dark P229. The bottom two are the original factory SIG SAUER logo grips that predate the Hogue ones.

Regarding the "balanced" feel of the P228 vs the P229, there is no point of doing it with an empty mag. Mags are fully loaded to 15 rounds (that's about an extra 7 oz). Testing them with open eyes obviously leads to bias because you already know which one is heavier/lighter. So, I did it with closed eyes and had my wife hand me either gun by the grip only, not touching the slide. I got it right 9 out of 12 times. So, I supposed a person with better sensory system could get it right 100% of the time.

Continues to beat the shit out of me why SIG Exeter doesn't make P228 models like the bottom two. Before some half-wit says "b/c they won't sell, are all steel and therefore more expensive to make" - nope, they will sell and the company can easily bump the price up for premium models and gain a healthy margin.

Q, those are now beaters in our day in age. Just messing with you. Can you the measure the weight of the SAS model. I'm not at the house right now to weigh mine. I really liked the new 228 you just picked up. Thanks for everything you do for the sigforum in your knowledge and the karmas for veterans and first responders.

Sooo, the feedback provided in the OP re: the Folded carbon steel slide and alloy frame [a plain jane std. P228] feeling the most balanced of the four was with a full Magazine....Good to know. Thank you!

And, to add, I agree wholeheartedly that any evaluation of 'balance or feel' is completely invalid w/o a loaded Magazine, hence the question.

The last one's still the best one.

Sorry, the SAS ones are no longer in the collection. Can't imagine it being much less than the non-SAS model. Maybe 0.1 to 0.2 oz less because of the melt job?

Each one of those is so beautiful to me. I have always been a sucker for the all stainless steel sigs. I have had a couple all stainless 220s, 226s, and 229s, and love each one. I bet your 228s have to feel so sweet to shoot and watch how quickly the sights come back on target.

The stainless frame versions of the P228 were produced in extremely limited numbers by SIG overseas and rare as hens teeth. Sig Exeter can’t get its head out of its ass to produce such quality firearms.
