Hi all. I have a Glock 19 from ~2012 that I keep in the bedroom for home defense, and a Sig P365 that is a few years old that I purchased for carry (which I rarely do, but always want the ability to do). I recently started thinking about switching the Glock out for an older P228 in good condition and adding night sights. I have located one. I've owned a few older folded slide Sigs in the past (226, 220, 225), so in general, I'm familiar with them, but I've never owned a 228.

I'm curious on your thoughts on the matter. You guys often have insights I'd not considered.

All three are very good pistols in my opinion. But it seems to me you are comparing apples to oranges to avocados.

Personally, if it were me, I would purchase the P228 and then purchase something else for nightstand use like a Glock 17/47 or Sig P226. Big Grin

I would add the P228, and keep the G19, as you have the option for a light.

I agree. A house gun needs a light. Get the 228 to shove in your waistband since it has a hammer but Glock with light for house gun.

I actually do have an old Glock "TAC light" on it. It is made by Glock and has a light and laser. It is a good package, now that you mention it!

I don't know the generation dates but I massively prefer my gen4 Glocks over my gen2 and gen3. They fit my hand better. I just got my first gen5 and prefer that as well. As much as I love Sig classics I have bought and sold all my 228's and don't miss them. Hope this doesn't get me kicked out of the forum. lol

I like a Glock in my nightstand, in my hands a Sig is more accurate as the trigger is much better so have the Sig as a carry option. My sig is 239 in 357 Sig but previously carried a 228.

I can't really say what's driving this consideration. Something akin to boredom or nostalgia probably! Smile

For me, the Sig 228 is the gun I carry. My bedside is a Glock 34 with Surefire and 21 rd. mag.

If you absolutely can not afford or permit yourself to own both, then keep the one you shoot better.

Gen 3-5 G19s are a dime a dozen. P228s have long been out of production. If you find a good deal on a P228, get it if it means having to sell or trade your G19. There will always be G19s when you want one again.

A P228 at the price & condition I desired for a long time was a grail gun for me, b/c all the good ones in TX were in Q's possession.

If you have the money, get the 228 and figure the rest out later. 228s are just not showing up like they once did.

The P228 is an awesome gun, but IMO it falls into a different category than the G19.

The P228 is just about an antique. It has a DA/SA trigger, so you need to master two trigger pulls. The grip angle and manual of arms is also different, due to the decocker. So if you're going to switch, you'd better be prepared to put in some training time. Also keep in mind that it's discontinued, and while many of the parts are still readily available, there are some that are not or getting hard to find (extractor, old style firing pin, etc).

The P228 also lacks a rail, which IMO disqualifies it for nightstand duty, as it lacks the ability to mount a WML. The folded slide also makes it impossible to mill for an optic, so if you ever want to go that route you'd need some kind of goofy dovetail plate, which is a poor solution.

The Glock 19 is a current-production modern service pistol. It comes with full factory support and can accommodate (or be adapted to accommodate) all the modern accoutrements. It's a much more practical choice for nightstand duty, plus you already own it.

I say this as someone who loves the P228/P229. I searched for a P228 as a "grail gun" for years until I finally found one. As a "working tool" I prefer the more modern P229. I've been carrying a P229 daily off-duty for the past couple of years, and recently bought another to set up with an optic. The P228 lives in my safe as an occasional range toy and a "backup to the backup".

I think you should absolutely buy the P228. It's a fantastic gun and a pleasure to own and shoot. It also makes a fine carry gun. But keep the G19 on nightstand duty.

After collecting various Sigs for years, I sold all of them except for 1 (Triple SN West German P228). I have a second Triple SN West German P228 that I traded to a good friend of mine for a Les Baer 1911. I will never get rid my remaining P228. I cannot bring myself to use it as bedside pistol. Too high value (for me). I have a Gen 5 G19 with light/laser combo at bedside. That is my all around house gun (even when working in the backyard). In the event that I use it for self defense, the PD can confiscate it and hold it for years. Hell, they can even keep it Smile
I can buy another G19. But it will be difficult to replace my P228. I also have other pistols that I carry when I go out.

Buy the 228.

Keep the G19 as a self defense-house gun, it can easily be replaced if you use it in SD. It’s the F150 of guns.

The 228 becomes a range gun because they aren’t making anymore and parts are hard to find.

I know you like to rotate out luxury watches and replace them with other luxury watches. I suspect some of that mindset may be carrying over here, and I would urge you to consider the Glock more akin to an adjustable wrench you ought to just leave in the toolbox and just buy a P228 if you want one. You’ve spent more on effects pedals than what a Gen 3 19 is worth on the secondary market, I can tell you that for a fact. That old Glock Tac light is a collector’s item and not something I would actually keep on a defensive handgun in 2025. A TLR-2 would do you better if you like the functionality.

Yeah, I've definitely flipped through a lot of cool toys over the years. All a distraction. I don't really do that anymore. Not even with the guitar effect pedals. I came to realize I use the same three all the time (boost/overdrive and compressor always, and sometimes a bit of time-based like delay, but rarely..). Recently came to the conclusion that pedal nonsense was a distraction from the important work of practice and exploration of technique.

I think the 228 is probably more nostalgia for the machines of my youth -- the one that got away. I'll keep that Glock. I'll consider the 228, but only if it's an attractive price/package. My Glock will remain the home weapon. The 365 will remain my highly compact carry. Maybe the 228 will overlap some.

Were you serious that the Tac light was somehow more of a novelty collectible now? Or was that to mean there are better ones now, and I should upgrade?

I have both a Glock 19 sized Glcok 32 with 9mm conversion barrel (so a Glock 19 "ish" gun) and multiple P228/P229 and P229-1 guns and over 20 years experience with both platforms.

I'd say keep your Glock 19 like everyone says for HD due to it mounting a light.

But if you have the itch for a P228, you should get one.

I recently got a 2nd P228 just for a shooter because my original is too mint to shoot.

(I know, I'm more a SIG hoarder than a shooter, it's ok, not having problems buying things)

I then upgraded the new to me P228 with a SRT and new controls and I really like it as a sometimes carry/HD gun.

I happen to have a streamlight flashlight which I know isn't optimal as then I'm one handed handgunning.

My AR has a WML/Grip on it and honestly my pistol is just to get to my carbine/armor.

The stamped slide style firing pins and extractors are made by a place called "Robertsons Trading Post" and you can find them on well known auction sites.

The barrels are also still available for both the P228/P229 and P229-1 models at this time.

Mec-Gar magazines for both will be made for a long time.

Right now you can get every part for stamped slide Classic SIGs and more recent models, for most Classic SIGS the parts are not hard to find, nor are they rare.

Just takes the ability to use a internet search engine.

buy a few firing pin/extractors, an extra barrel, good amount of mec-gar magazines, springs from Wolff Spring, and you'll be set for life and then some.
