Not everyone buys ammo for SHTF, which is pretty unlikely even now. I think most people stock up on it because they want to still be able to go shooting while they wait for stock levels to return to normal.

And if S does HTF, the .22lr cartridge has a lot of uses.

I'd be more inclined to go with "highly unlikely."

That's why I have a good bit more on-hand than I'd use in the foreseeable future. I remember scraping for 9mm during the Zero Years. Wasn't fun.

But this is not that. Then there was at least a mildly credible threat: That Zero & Co. would move to limit access to guns and ammo. Here we have no such dynamic--save in a couple states and cities ruled by leftists who will use Any Excuse to advance their agenda.

Yup. Good for small game, for starters.

Exactly. I have seen more times than I like to remember how ammunition shortages had or would have had severely limiting effects on my ability to shoot when I wanted and as much as I wanted. For some time now I have, to the best of my ability, taken measures to avoid that’s happening ever again.

“Well, you’ll never shoot up all that ammo because with that attitude you’ll just keep buying more. You’re just wasting your money doing that.” No, I’m not. Having what I might ever need or want gives me peace of mind and contentment. The money I’ve spent to achieve peace of mind and contentment were well worth every cent even if I never fire another shot.

I started in the end of the Bush era buying 1000 rounds every time congress did something very stupid. Since I shoot 100-150 rounds a week I only have 1 pallet of ammo at this time. That pallet is the height of my short wife.

I know right because the average thug coming to assault during the TPocalypse will just brush aside those 10 or 15 rounds of .22. I mean they will just advance through them like a stiff breeze. Roll Eyes

Like everybody said it’s so folks can shoot for fun in the lean times. That said even thought we are not going to go all mad max and I would never suggest anybody buy a .22 strictly for self defense a hail of .22 rounds is gonna make most anybody put you on their fuckit list.

I see you're new around these parts.
Let me give you a clue as to what most (probably 95+% of the people here on S/F) do as far as purchasing ammo-
You ever heard of the parable about the Ants and the Grasshoppers?

We're not hoarding at all.
We've been there.
We've been through all the scares over the past few decades. The $95 AR mags after Sandyhook. The prices of AR's after Sandyhook and thru the obama administration. The .22 shortage a few years back... And we learned.

We bought ammo when it was readily available. We bought 5.56 by the CASE at $275, $290, $300. And we've done it the past few years when it was cheap and available. We did the same with 9mm, .45, .380, .38/.357, 308 et al...
We've been doing this for a while now.
That's why we're sitting on 2,3,5,7,10...20...30 THOUSAND rounds.

Don't believe me? Take a look:

https://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/410601935

Scroll back, see the proof... We've been buying bulk for a long time Wink

My advice to you, young grasshopper, is when this mess levels out, toss a few hundred at a case of what you need. Then when you got some extra cash, get another case. Then another. And another.

So when the next shit-storm rolls around, you might have enough ammunition sitting close by. Cool

First, the large amount of 22LR is for practice during another shortage. Some of us like and shoot 22 a lot.

Second, during social breakdown you can always practice since there may be no internet or cable. However, people have use 22LR in self defense. In some areas of the world that have a breakdown in order, they carry two rifles one of which is in 22LR. If approached at a distance one can brandish the smaller rifle and even fire some warning shots or shots near them as a warning. If the apocalypse desperados advance one can then switch to 5.56mm. It helps in saving ammo.

Their issue isn't with how much he has, but how/when he came by it.

Exactly. The OP ran around to Wallywords and sounds like cleaned them out of Mini mags. How is that any better than the tool in TN that did that with hand sanitizer at the beginning of this cluster?

Stock up, buy what you need, but hoarding at the last minute? Swap the word ammo for hand sanitizer, or TP, or whatever they are hoarding. It is all the same BS IMO.

To answer the original question though, I have enough, but not as much as I should have, but I decided that I don't want to move/store it all in a couple years when we hit the road. I'm sure I'll regret that decision though.

Yes I was able to clean out Wallyworld because no one have been buying the ammo and it was sitting on the shelves collecting dust.

I went to the NRA 2nd amendment symposium last fall in Richmond area. One of the lawyers stated that it is wise to stockpile 10,000 of your favorite ammo's since the gun control cult is trying to limit ammunition.

In the city people who stockpile are called hoarders. In the rural areas they are called common sense folks.

I ordered another 1000 9mm and 500 5.56 yesterday. I don't have as much ammo as a lot of you but the few thousand rounds I do have will probably suffice. Too bad I won't get the ammo I ordered for another month or so.

I have been shooting, reloading and buying ammo for the last 45 years. When times are good I buy it up and when times are lean I still have plenty to keep me shooting. Things were good for the last few years and I kept buying. I don't have a lot of 22s, maybe 10000rds, I don't keep track of them. With centerfire handgun, rifle and shotgun ammo reloads and factory I keep a database. As of today I have 55237 rds total. I don't care if anyone calls me a hoarder, I am prepared and not going to cry every time there is a shortage.

I agree and made that clear in my last post. In 2013 and 2014 there was almost no 9MM ammo available yet I was able to shoot 3-4 boxes from my stock no sweat on monthly range trips. The guy at the counter would always asked with a grin if I wanted 9MM kept behind the counter when I paid my range fee showing me a box of PMC 115 gr marked $25 and his grin disappeared when I said no I am good. I love shooting 22LR also and have conversion kit for P226, a Browning Buckmark, and M&P 22 Compact plus a couple rifles.

All you guys making a case for 22 LR: I don't disagree with its usefulness, but it doesn't explain the hoarding. Anybody who keeps a large stocks of 22 to get through the lean times or for normal practice has been stockpiling it while prices were low, not panic buying now. I've got 5-6K rounds myself.

I guess I need to buy more ammo!! I have about 1,000 rounds each of 9mm and 5.56, and a few boxes of my other assorted calibers. Until I read this thread I felt comfortable with that amount.

That’s the problem, there’s always someone with more to make you feel inadequate. Big Grin

At 27k worth of .22lr alone I know I’m fine, but dang it I feel like I could use more. Same goes for 9mm and 5.56. The only thing I’m actually hurting for is .30-06 for the M1.

I guess to clarify, I'm in the 40-50K range. Around 25K 22LR, 10K 5.56, 3-4K 308, 6-7K 9MM, then 500-1K per 38,357, 45, 17HMR, 12ga, etc.

Reloading power / primers to reload 5-8K rifle and pistol rounds as needed.

I found a box in the corner, I didn't know what it was. Opened it to find a case of CCI Blazer 22LR I purchased the week before Hillary was supposed to be elected.

22LR is always good to have around for training, plinking, and hunting. The 9MM I have is mostly cheap Wolf for training, but a case or 2 is brass. I prefer to stock 5.56/308 for TEOTWAKI reasons, because if the shooting ever really started (unlikely), people are rapidly going to switch to rifles from pistols. So rifle ammo is better to me (more capable, lethal, etc).
