I started with nothing, and still have most of it ![]() |
...I'm looking at a factory DAO P226 on a local forum, and am a bit confused. The slide definitely says "Made in Germany", and the date code is KJ, but it is triple numbered. Did triple numbering occur that late? Thanks... "While not every Democrat is a horse thief, every horse thief is a Democrat." HORACE GREELEY

German made and proofed SIGs were made until their factory permanently shut down at the end of 2020. So, the answer to your question is yes. Q

OK then, so I had a factory 2 tone P220 with early style slide release that was not triple numbered. It said "Made in Germany" on the slide. Was there a category so marked but not really made in Germany? It was made in the time frame you mentioned above, but with SN only on frame. thanks. Wait, what?![]() |
No folded slides were made in the US; all the slides manufactured in the US are milled stainless steel. Triple serial Sigs were made in Germany and imported. Folded slide Sigs without triple numbers were assembled in the US from German made parts. If your two tone is a folded slide Sig, it was one of these. It is virtually identical to a triple serial Sig but lacks the proof mark. I have a P220 similar to your gun with a serial number on the frame only that is identical in every way to the triple number Sig I carried on duty for 23 years. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

Thanks, I can relate to that info and it fits with what I'm seeing on the 1998 factory DAO offered on a local forum, and with my past experience with a folded slide single numbered gun that says "Made in Germany". As gearhounds said, that one had parts made in Germany, but final assembly was done in the US. Hence, no proof marks and only single serial on frame. If a gun was made and assembled in Germany, then by CIP regulations, it has to be proof tested, and if passes, given the proof marks. Contrary to popular belief, "triple serial numbers" is not a requirement for the German made/proofed SIGs, although they were so marked during the era of folded slide guns. The requirement is the proof markings as noted above.
When you see P228s with single serial numbers (on frame) that start with 3 letters (AAU, AHU, AJU and AKU) instead of the usual "B", know that the frames were US made, although the folded slides were German made. Most of these were made in late 2012 and early 2013. Q

All good info for me, thanks! And for maybe another catagory, I have a JC P220 with just 2 SN, slide and barrel, nothing on frame. "While not every Democrat is a horse thief, every horse thief is a Democrat." HORACE GREELEY

Interesting. My P250 has all three. Never seen an unserialized frame.

stiab, the frame's SN is on the grip's front strap. As for the double SN only on German made/proofed SIGs, the Xguns, up until the last year and half before the factory closing, had only numbers on frame and slide. Then, for whatever reason, they decided to start putting number on the barrel also. Strange why they did what they did. Q

Yes it is! I probably knew that at one time, but only take it out of the safe to wipe off about once a year. Thanks for reminding me! "While not every Democrat is a horse thief, every horse thief is a Democrat." HORACE GREELEY
