Help needed- Putting P229 slide on P228 Login/Join

I am looking to put a P229 RX slide on my P228. Research seemed to indicate that people have successfully put P228 slides on P229s. My P228 is a KG date. I'm reusing the barrel, guide rod and recoil spring. However, the new assembly seems to be hanging up on the feed ramp, it's not clearing the locking insert. The barrel seems to fit snugly in the slide, Sig shows the same part for both pistols, this should fit. Any suggestions for getting this to fit? Maybe the old mid90s barrels are not interchangeable? Is this a fitting issue or should I go for a newer P228/229 barrel? I'm hoping some members with more esoteric knowledge may be able to shed some light on things. Thanks.

The locking insert (there's two) and barrel lug feed ramp heights are different.

*edit to make correction

Lots of questions, can you expand? Two locking inserts as in two different P228 types, or are you referring to the fact there is a P229 9mm locking insert that is different? How can I tell between different barrels with different
lug heights? Since the current Sig website says they are interchangeable, I presume there is a point where the dimensions became the same, and my P228 barrel predates that. I'm going to presume I will likely need a P229 locking insert and a new model P228/229 barrel. Is this what I need to get the p229 slide to work on my P228? Thanks

Is the 229 a 9mm? Can you post pictures?

To use the 229-1 slides on the 228 and early 229 you will need to use the barrel for that slide and the locking insert.

You will need the complete slide assy with the 229-1/.40 cal locking insert.

Since I bought the slide from SIG recently I assume I have a P229-1 slide. If I'm tracking you correctly, I'll need a newer P229 9mm barrel, plus...which locking insert? I'm keeping this 9mm. Aren't there two different locking inserts? One for 9mm and other for 357/40?

The 229 RX slide is a 229-1.
Long extractor is a 229-1, early 229 9mm have a short extractor and use the same barrel and locking insert as a 228.
The 229-1 and .40/.357 Sig locking insert is the same.

Ok so get a new P229 barrel and 357/40 locking insert and I'm in business then?

Yep.
I'd get a guide rod and spring for it as well.

Keep everything together on the 228 slide.

Perfect. This is exactly the information I needed. I really appreciate your help.

Here's the facts which I have...

The 228 and the original 229/9 (not the 229-1) have the same barrel specs.

The new 229-1 and the 229/40/357 have the same lug specs. However, the 229/40/357 barrel is larger in diameter. And wider barrel hood extension.
The 229-1 barrel is the same diameter as the 228 and 229/9.
(This allows you to put a 229-1 barrel in a 228, 229/9 slide and have the proper insert when using a 229-1, 229/40/357 frame.

The difference is the feed ramp on the 228, 229/9 is longer than the 229-1, 229/40/357.

Now to the locking inserts:

The 228 and the original 229/9 have the same insert.

The 229-1 and the 229/40/357 have the same insert.

The difference is the 229-1, 229/40/357 is taller then the 228, 229/9.

So, all the slides will fit onto a frame which has the shorter insert.
However, the slides from a 228 and 229/9 will not fit onto a frame with the taller insert. As the feed ramp will hit the insert and stop it from sliding completely onto the frame.

Now to the frames:

The 228 and the 229/9 are the same.
The 229-1 and the 229/40/357 are the same.

The only difference is the width in which the magwell is cut. The 229-1, 229/40/357 being wider to accept the wider stepped mags.
The slimmer mags will fit and function in the wider cut frame, but they will be a little loose.

** there are some exceptions out there (like 12131's 228ST) which doesn't fit the facts above. As the 228ST uses the same frame as the 229ST, which has the wider magwell. And should have the shorter insert.

*** this information doesn't include the newer 'long extractor' slides. They should have all the same specs as the 229/40/357, but I don't own any of these for comparison.

If the 228 has the original barrel and insert... the new slide should fit.

The only way it doesn't, is if the 228 has a newer 229-1 barrel and taller insert.
Now the new 229 slide with the original longer feed ramp barrel, hits the newer taller insert.

So the question becomes, is the 228's barrel and insert original to the frame?
(Assuming the frame is original??? B serial number?)

It won’t with the original P228 barrel. What powermad said above is correct. You can’t use a P228 or P229/9 barrel in a P229-1 slide. The RX slide Sig sells is a long extractor P229-1 slide and needs a P229-1 barrel and P229-1 / P229 .40/.357 locking insert. The Sig website even disclaims that the RX slide will only work on an M11-A1 or other P229-1 frame. You can make it work on a P228 or P229/9 frame if you know what you’re doing but I understand why Sig doesn’t want to deal with those who can’t work it out for themselves.

Since the 228, 229/9 & 229-1 barrels all have the same dimensions (other than the slightly shorter feed ramp on the 229-1)... why won't it work?

The only thing which should keep it from working, is if the frame has the taller 229/40/357 locking insert with a 9mm barrel having the longer feed ramp.

The original insert for the 228 is short, so anything should slide on and lock into place.

Yes all original P228 B serial, triple stamped on frame, barrel, slide. Bought it around '97 or so.

Powermad and ah3's observations match what I'm experiencing. With stock locking insert and P228 barrel in the new P229-1 RX slide, I am definitely hanging up on the feedramp hitting the locking insert.

Since it has an original barrel, it should have the longer feed ramp with the shorter locking insert.
* unless there's something unusual about your particular 228?

This makes no sense, as a 229-1 barrel fits in a 228 slide, will slide on a 228 frame and lock in place.
The 229-1 barrel will also fit and work in a 229/9 slide, will fit a 228 frame, 229/9 frame or a 229/40/357 frame.

What you describe is what happens with a longer feed ramp barrel/tall insert combination.

I don't see how the barrel could possible fit differently in the 229RX slide and cause issues.

Do you have a way to measure the barrel or locking insert?
Set the barrel on its hood and measure the distance to the edge of the feed ramp.
Or measure the locking insert height.

Here's a couple measurements for comparison:

228 barrel is .831 hood to feed ramp lip
229-1, 229/40/357 barrel is .780 hood to feed ramp lip

228 locking block is .828 tall .708 short feed ramp height
229/40/357 locking block is .828 tall .735 short feed ramp height

228, 229-1 barrel diameter is .530
229/40/357 barrel diameter is .550
