For my friends in CA...what’re you buying / carrying?

I’m in CA, but am not buying any carry guns. Nothing currently on the roster interests me. I almost exclusively carry a P228, though I also have a P226R in 9mm on my permit. I purchased a few off roster pistols (P320s, gen 5 G19), but lately off roster pricing has gotten even more insane than it already was.

Idaho, Montana, and Arizona keep looking better all the time...

I am allowed 3 on my permit. I have an M&P40, Shield 9 and LCP on it. When I renew, I will be replacing the M&P40 and Shield with a CZ75 D PRC. It's not much bigger than the Shield, gives me a few extra rounds and I'd prefer not to carry a striker AIWB. I will likely add a revolver (LCR) at some point. For those from out of state, CA requires you to qualify with the guns on your permit, so changing them is a pain in the ass requiring certification and revising the permit.

And beyond that, they are listed by make, model, serial number, and caliber. If you want a multi-caliber pistol on your permit, you have to qualify with each caliber. Well, that and a CA permit is good for two years vs the four, five, or seven of other states I’m familiar with.

It was nice when NV dropped the make & model (and caliber? don’t remember) and just went to handgun.

G19, P226 and P225. The P226 is a bag/truck gun, rarely do I carry that on my person outside of Winter when I can wear more layers.

If you can get your hands on an 'off-roster' P365xl, get it.

Dumb question: If you are still active duty LE, why don’t you buy what you want that is not on the roster now, while it doesn’t apply to you? Once you own it, it is yours. If you leave LE status there is no requirement to get rid of your off roster handguns. About half the off roster handguns I have were on the roster when I got them. I didn’t have to get rid of them when they fell off.

Fair enough. I hadn’t considered the possibility. Upon consideration, I don’t think it likely, but it certainly can’t be ruled out that they’d try anything.

What are you looking for in a catty gun?

You can easily search for what is currently on the roster at https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search , though there is no guarantee anything will stay on the roster...
