Looks like the Maryland Gun Works MGW-307 is discontinued. Can someone recommend a suitable replacement? Is their ~$300 model truly universal? What about the Wheeler universal sight tool for ~$160? Thanks JB --------------------------------------- It's like my brain's a tree and you're those little cookie elves.

The universal pusher is universal, but you need to buy individual brand plates for the pistols you are changing sights on. This article has some more detail. https://www.thetruthaboutguns....-mgw-sight-pro-tool/ After years of using off-brand / etc sight pushers, I finally bought one and the plates I need. It was expensive but it's a great tool. I still have their Glock specific tool as well, but use the big tool for SIGs, Berettas, and HKs. No exp with the Wheeler, I used a https://sightpusher.com/ for awhile and it's pretty rudimentary and easy to ding your slide if you aren't really careful.

I picked up a Wheeler on sale from Brownells for less than $100. I've removed the sights on 365's and up no problem.

The MGW “universal” tool is one of those, “Man, I wish I’d had this years ago,” purchases for me. It’s hard to know if an expense like that can be justified when we’re starting out, but if we think that we’ll ever want to advance to doing work ourselves on our guns, it’s one of those confidence and peace of mind things: I know I can do the work whenever I want and need to, and can do it myself as well as anyone else can—and probably better than most. I don’t use my tool very often, but when I do and think of what the alternative methods might be, the expense is a very distant memory. ► 6.4/93.6

I have the Wheeler universal and like it. It is definitely a compromise over a dedicated pusher since it takes a little longer to get the gun positioned in it. I am very interested in this one, too: https://sightpusher.com/produc...-handgun-sight-tool/ One of the complaints with a lot of sight tools is that they input torque on the sight because the screw that turns the pusher is above and not in line with the sight. That can result in a sight not being pushed true and can theoretically bend or break the sight (never been an issue for me). There is also some loss of power on really tight dovetails. The linked pusher uses a screw with a round end that is driven right into the side of the sight. If you've ever seen Beretta's $500 APX sight tool, this is similar in concept.

Upon a couple recommendations here on SF, I purchased one of these just about a year ago: Handgun Sight Pusher Tool Universal for 1911 glock sig springfield and others The manufacturer used to be on Amazon, too. Now it looks like all there is is a bunch of Chinese clones of it Jesus, those assholes will steal anything, won't they? I tried it on my Colt Defender. Would not move that sight. In the tool's defense: The smith at my LGS couldn't move it, either. Finally a smith at another not-quite-so-local gun store moved it--with a steel punch and hammer. His comment: "There isn't a sight pusher made that was going to move that." I will say this: I applied what I felt to be more-than-prudent force to my pusher. It did not break, or even so much as distort, anything--on either tool or pistol. I haven't had a need to move any sights since then. I note the seller gets a 99.7% approval rating on eBay. IIRC, the product had a high rating when it was still on Amazon. I bought mine on eBay, because shipping was also free and it was $5 or so cheaper. "America is at that awkward stage. IIRC, SIG used to sell their own branded pusher. If it's for P-series pistols alone, there may be some used ones for sale out there. FWIW, though, I seem to recall the 2022 and its brethren needed a pusher of their own.

http://www.rearsighttool.com I've used the Rear Sight Tool to replace rear and front sights on quite a few pistols, including various Sigs. It works well.

I have the MGW Sight Pro and it is really nice. I justified it by letting my friends know I can install sights, but they have to buy the shoe, if I need it. If you like nice tools then you won't be disappointed. There is no way you will damage a slide if you follow the video/directions. I would rather go this route then let some hack mess up a nice pistol and you have to look at the mess they caused every time you shoot it!

This ^^^ The thing with the MGW is that it is fine-threaded. This translates to more power and smoother power as compared to the lower cost pushers which are coarse-threaded. The MGW also locks down the slide with a more developed system. Sight-Tool.com is probably the best of the lower cost pushers. I had the VISM pusher and its effectiveness is limited. Anything with a long RSA pocket won't fit in the VISM (this includes most SIGs).

I have this exact model and it's worked great on all my 220's and my 320 as well.

ATG Patch and NcSTAR Heavy Duty Universal Pistol Dovetailed Rear Sight Pusher Tool https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D..._api_i_tWoLEb24FQ11G I bought this one quite a while back and it works very well, even on the newer slim single stack Glocks. Have actually had LEO buddies hit me up a few times to use it. Not sure if it would work in the newer Sig pistols but it’s worked on everything tried so far. Good build quality and comes with some inserts to protect the finish as well. ___________________________ Not giving a damn since...whenever...

Add me in with the MGW fans. The last time I had sights installed “professionally” it cost me $50 just for installation. Since I purchased my MGW Sight Pro I have used it to install and remove 6 sets of sights on and 6 off. I’m glad I have it.

I got MGW years ago and used it to replace white dots with night sights and recently install Xrays and fiber optic sights. Have another couple night sights to replace with fiber optic or x-ray. Have lent it out several times. Lord know how many dollars were saved plus could adjust at the bench at the range. Try dragging your gunsmith out to the range with you.

This sums it up perfectly. I ditched several, model specific sight tools after I picked up the MGW Sight Pro. This is the end all/be all sight tool, as far as I'm concerned. Even the super tough Springfield XD series sights were no match for it. The last LGS I worked for and the current one I fill in part time at, both switched over to the MGW universal tool several years ago and they're still going strong. After reading this thread, It looks like I am the only person in the world to have bought the MGW Range Master. I like Commander sized 1911's and my 220 is a carry size {3.9 inch} My 938 etc are all smaller rather than large. Saved $100 over buying the Pro. Locks the same as the Pro and all the shoes are the same. And to adjust a sight, I can do it myself. MGW is who use to make all the make dependent sight pushers for Sig. After they came out with the Pro, They quite making the gun specific pushers. Then they made the Range Master for those that don't do full sized 1911's

I have one of those and very happy with it. Bought from Amazon. So far, I've changed sights on Springfield, Sigs, Glock, Canik, and Smith and Wesson . There's someone on Ebay selling 5 of them for $80 each . Pick up in NY . New seller with zero rating. Probably burglarized a business that's in a lockdown. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wheel...3.l4275.c10#viTabs_0

That's the VISM that I commented on above. I have one. It's fine for rear sights but there is no clearance for a slide with a long RSA pocket. So doing a SIG front sight is a no go.

That’s good to know. I could never understand what the difference was between the Range Master and Pro. The RM wasn’t available when I bought the Pro, but the people who borrow mine will probably be glad it will work with the full sized 1911. ► 6.4/93.6
