Quality hammer-fired 9mm handguns? Login/Join

Hello,

I am a fan of metal framed handguns. I was trying to figure out what quality 9mm handguns use metal frames and hammers, and have manufacturing dates of less than 30 years old.

So far I've come up with this list:
  • Browning HP
  • 1911 [all makes and sizes]
  • Sig P226/P229 series
  • Beretta 92 series
  • Taurus PT92/99 [some may argue about this and quality.]
  • CZ75 series, including SP01/tactical/shadow/other variants.

Is there something else I've missed?

Please don't reference WW II handguns or items from the 1950s. I am deliberately excluding those at this time.
I've already thought of some like the P08 Luger, Walther P38, Star Model B/B Super, S&W Model 39/59. But I am trying to think of more modern designs.

Sigs and Non-Sigs: I enjoy having options!

1st, 2nd and 3rd gen Smith & Wesson autos.

You can discard the 1st gen if you like, as they started in the '50s, but the others should qualify.

A couple that I would add that I've owned and used are Beretta or Stoeger 8000 and the Sphinx SDP.

There are of course many CZ/Browning HP/1911 clones from Turkey available as well.

Staccato XC, P, C2, C, etc.

Wilson Combat EDC X9/X9L

And some may question the word "quality" when it comes to the Ruger P89, but IMO, it is a good 9mm pistol.

A bunch of fru-fru European bullshit, having little connection to the real world, costing on average 9000 dollars each and come in perfumed boxes made from Unicorn pizzle.

If that's your thing.

I just picked up a SDS Inglis P35 copy. $430! All steel. No mim, no mag safety. Crowned barrel. Brass bead front sight. Very impressed with fit/finish. 150 rounds, all ball. No issues. It did shoot way high so going back for higher front sight,

Somehow, I knew you wouldn’t resist. Wink

Actually more than just that, but since you brought it up, yes the finest in the world (foreign and domestic) are among them. They aren’t meant to be for everyone and you know what? I’m glad they aren’t. If so, there would be nothing special or elite about them.

You’re right though, some are like a Ferrari or Lamborghini and have little connection to the world most live in. Some are even like Bugatti or Koenigsegg and nearly impossible to find or obtain regardless of your means. That’s fine by me. Cool

Don’t know about your 30 year cut off. To me anything post 1945 is new enough. Lots of good quality 50’s 60’s 70’s guns out there. Keep in mind prior to about 1990,nearly everything was hammer fired! For the most part old=good.

Nothing Para said was wrong. If you like em, buy em. But folks aren't buying a Bugatti to drive to work everyday. And I think it's a silly notion to claim anything special or "elite" about the firearms you like is anything but subjective.

My grandpa's side by side 410 is worth more than any gun you own. Your post proves Para's point and my opinion of things as well.

Most of the items on this list might still have been in production after 1995, but are there any current production, metal-framed, hammer-fired guns that were actually designed less than 30 years ago? I'm not talking variants of existing designs like a CZ TS2 or Sig X5, or clones/boutique builds of an existing designs like 1911s...I mean actual unique underlying designs.

I think a Kimber Stainless II gets a slot on that list.

The S&W CSX comes to mind as one of the newest - likely the newest - metal-framed hammer-fired designs. It was introduced in 2022.

Good call...I forgot about that one. It's kinda 1911-ish, but different enough to be unique.

You have the Browning Hi-Power (GP35) and the M1911 on your list?

Am I missing something?

I would add the Star Model 28 or 30M and Benelli B76.

Otto, your opinion is your opinion and you’ve stated it before. I honestly don’t care. The constant backlash actually proves my point.

I’m actually very happy not to see every Tom, Dick, and Harry shooting the guns I do. They aren’t meant to be for everyone and they aren’t produced in quantity to be for everyone.

Carry on
