S&W J-frame early type grip screw P/N? Login/Join

I've been trying to determine what the P/N for the early type small diameter J-Frame stock screw is.

S&W themselves could not help, nor could another S&W specific forum.

Anyone here have any ideas?

Thanks

What year J-frame is it that you're looking for a grip screw for?

I've got a few J-frames from the 50's 60's and 70's, and I also have a bunch of new grip screws in my stash. I might be able to match one up and send it to you.

Therein lies the problem with this quest. The stocks are NOT installed on a J-Frame and they are not numbered. I can't remember if they came from a buddy's estate or from somewhere else entirely.

All I've been able to determine is that S&W originally used a #3-48 thread on J-Frame stocks before changing to a #5-44 thread in the 1970's at some point and the 3-48 screw seems to be what I need.

I came up with two P/N's from my early 1980's factory parts book, but I was unable to determine if this one was what I'm after or not: 071910000.

I've looked at all the big parts houses and some of the smaller ones and have not turned up anything yet other than fully threaded repros that might work on eBay which is an option I would prefer to avoid.

That is the later 5-44 screw unfortunately. Bought one and found that out the hard way.

Can you replace the escutcheon nut and use the standard screw?

That is an option I had not considered. I suppose I could, but I'd likely have to do both sides due to the difference in screw diameters and I would be afraid of damaging both stocks attempting to remove the existing escutcheons.

That said, I wonder if I have a 5-44 tap in my great grandfather's machinist chest and could drill out the existing escutcheons and retap the hole to 5-44?

Hmmmmm.......

Not a name I've heard before. I have a set of S&W cokes that need to be restored and sounds like a good guy to talk to and I would appreciate his contact info.

I'd have to rework the heads to fit which might be a challenge.

Interestingly enough when going through my "inventory" of spare parts, I actually have a set of J-Frame stocks with the correct screw. They are numbered and appear to date to about 1956. No idea where these came from either. At least I know what I'm looking for now visually.
