I’d love to pick up a 23oz .44spl model.
$1270, ouch, but oh what a sweet hiking gun that would be.

Honestly I’ll wait to see the reviews first. My last 2 S&W purchases were disappointments with each a mechanical POS that returns to Smith didn’t cure.

The 3” barrel is a sweet spot for casual carry & use. One that I have that’s close is a Kimber 3” 357, not sure how the weight compares.

The Kimber is 23-25 ounces.

This is pretty exciting. If I can afford one of these I'll be getting the .357. I'd love a 3" L-Frame .44, but I've got no use for a special. Give me a 369 instead of a 396. The 386 would be a great option for hiking in places where I don't need the full power of the 329PD.

The 396 would be a great ranch gun for homesteads/farms/ranches in snake country (e.g. Texas). Load it with snake shot for rattlers, water moccasins, and copperheads.

I think it's size, weight, capacity, and reliability make it better option than the Charter Arms Bulldog, Taurus Judge, S&W governor, or Bond Arms Snake Slayer.

When I retire and buy the land for the homestead, I could use an existing gun I already own (where is the fun in that?) such as the Ruger Redhawk Super Alaskan (use 45 colt snake shot but it's a whopping 44 ounces) or the S&W 642 (use 38 snake shot but the 44 snake shot has a better reputation).

Very pretty just not sure I can justify the cost over an LCRx for a hiking/kit gun?

How is that Lipseys can come up with all kinds of cool concepts when S&W, on their own, does not?
Well... Doesnt matter I guess!

That's fair, and obviously a personal decision. But the 386 offers much better grip options and I've never warmed up to the LCR trigger. You are saving a few ounces with the Ruger, but you're giving up two rounds. And I know it shouldn't matter, but I just can't get over the fugliness of the LCR/LCRX.

The price on the Smith is certainly steep, though.

@YooperSigs,
Regular people like you & me send emails to Lipsey's and TALO asking for this or that. When enough emails arrive asking for the same things, Lipsey's and TALO listens.
They have the clout and the cash and place orders with the various manufacturers. The manufacturers aren't out anything. They just produce the products that were ordered & spec'd.

Lipsey's and TALO are the people gambling that what those emails asked for, now they will (or won't) step up and buy what was asked for.
I like to look at this process as short production run almost custom guns built by the regular makers at nearly regular maker pricing.
It's a "win - win" for everybody, as long as they sell out the production run.

I have several Ruger Single Action revolvers that were made in this manner. One TALO and one Lipsey's.
Both of them exhibit fit and finish well beyond what one usually expects for a standard factory produced item.
I love the concept, the process and the finished products!

Well, your post got me thinking so I looked up the weight of the new 386 Nightguard. S&W lists it as 24.4 oz. Then I got out the kitchen scale and went and pulled something out of my safe.

Dammit. You just saved me $1200. But why am I kinda disappointed?

Facts.
I hate it when facts scuttle a planned purchase.
Are a few ounces worth $1200 to you?

For me it's a hiking gun, so weight is a big factor. If they ever make that 15-17oz 4" Scandium J-Frame in .357 I've been dreaming about, I'll be on that like stink on a skunk for that price. But in this case the 386 Nightguard is both bigger and heavier, both negatives for my use-case.

I still hope Lispsey's sells a ton of these, though. I love the very fact that this exists, and I want them to keep doing projects like this.

If that 15-17 oz 4" Scandium J-frame in .357 is really what you want, send Jason at Lipsey's an email.
You never know, he might already have 999 emails requesting that particular build.
Your email would get the total up to 1000, which could flip the switch for production!

How is that possible? That is a 4” 686. How can a scandium frame/steel cylinder 3” 686 weigh more? That seems, unlikely. Somebodies scale is off and I think it’s S&W.

These are cool but they aren’t $1200 cool.

I just want every version S&W offers done lockless like God intended. When they do that I will immediately buy a Model 66, a Model 63, and I don’t know what else but those two will be a good start.

I believe that’s a Model 60 with 3 inch barrel. I’ve been looking for reasonably priced one for years.

I’m also on a lookout for this one. Couple ounces heavier but much more robust than the m60 I’m thinking.

Jason and I have corresponded a couple of times, including about that exact topic. He already knows my deepest wants and desires, at least as they pertain to revolvers lol.

And yeah, sorry for the confusion Pedro....that's a 3" model 60 J-Frame, not a 686. I realize that it's not a direct replacement for a 386, but it suits my needs better while providing the same ballistics...and it's actually lighter. So because I have that I can't really justify the nightguard Frown.

Yeah, the 2 rounds is a factor. The grip nor the trigger on the LCRx seem to bother me. The fact that it's a $500 makes me not care about it getting dirty or wet in the field vs a beautiful S&W at $1,200 I'll say.
