No lock is a step in the right direction. They need pinned barrels, old style firing pin, etc to be totally "old school" for me at least.

I have ZERO practical need for it, but that 629 Mountain Gun is calling my name.

I emailed my local guy this morning and put my name down for the 629 Mountain Gun. I’m supposed to get a call when he gets it in.

I need to do that. I really don't need it, but I really, really want it. Did your guy give you any idea what they're going to be priced at?

No firm price from him, but another local place had a listing for it on their site at $1074.

Y'all are discussing "mountain guns." I have no idea what a mountain gun is. Google tells me that it is "a piece of artillery designed for use in mountainous terrain or other areas where wheeled transport is not practical," but I don't thing that's what is being discussed. Can somebody explain the term for me? What is a mountain gun? הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Somewhat of a lighter profile barrel. (more visual taper near the muzzle) Several ounces lighter compared to a constant diameter barrel or full underlug extending to the muzzle. The Mountain Gun series originally started as the Mountain Revolver. It was a 629 with weight savings measures of a tapered barrel, round butt, and beveled cylinder. Then it was renamed the Mountain Gun for the ^29, additional models of the 625 both in .45 Colt and .45ACP followed, there may have been a 657 in .41 Magnum and then one very short run for the 686. Basically their lightweight woods carry gun before they started with the alloy and scandium revolvers. I've got a 629-5 that I bought new and have carried a lot. I've always wanted a 686 version since that is my favorite Smith & Wesson. I've got a 686-4 plus that is unfired and bought a Mountain Gun Barrel and gold bead front site and I was going to make a Mountain Gun out of it and never have gotten around to sending it to a gunsmith to make it happen. I'm planning on getting one of the new ones. My daughter can deflate your daughter's soccer ball.

In my case, the 629 Mountain Gun is 10 ounces lighter than my 629 Classic. I may go in search of one while avoiding watching TV on Feb. 9. There's some truth to the definition that V-Tail submitted, to be honest. ![]()

One could make the argument that a .44 Magnum is a piece of artillery. My daughter can deflate your daughter's soccer ball.

The 629MG is out in the wild now. I've seen several posted on various forums with good overall first impressions and they have hit GB (at the expected inflated pricing) as well. Still no word from the two dealers I reached out to in January. I tried a third dealer yesterday and no luck there either. Has anyone here seen one in person yet?

Well that's good news even though I'm not in the position to drop the money on one any time soon. I'm hoping somebody on here snags one and posts a review so I can live vicariously. Finding one of these on the shelf in the LGS would likely cause me to make bad decisions.

I’m glad these are starting to show up and am awaiting the arrival of the 686 variant of the new MG. "The sea was angry that day, my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli." - George Costanza

Plus one on the 'lockless' Smith Mountain Gun...though I'd prefer it in .45 Colt. After all, I already have a M69, .44 Magnum with its 4.25" bbl. and weighs just 1 oz. more than my K frame M19. I already have a half safe full of .357's that don't get out as much as they should and the thought of those big ole fat 260 gr .45 slugs with that little bitty flat pointed tip scream "OLD SCHOOL" to me and you just know they'll do the job. Truth be told, I no longer notice the )@#$_#$ Locks on several of my Smiths. All of them BTW, are equally accurate compared to my old back in the day, pinned and recessed ones. The new triggers, however good in SA mode, are way too heavy in DA. I'll just bet none of those panty waist lawyers at S&W could even get a DA to fire, let alone hit any thing with it. To those that want the return of the pinned and recessed bbl's, elimination of MIM parts et. al., you'd better be ready to pay for the changes and they won't be cheap..
