GP100 has been in production since 1985, SP101 since 1989.

By contrast, the Security Six, Service Six and Speed Six lasted only 16 years.

All of the the tooling still exists for these discontinued guns and you can bet that many of those models will reappear from time to time, and people will snap them up.

Revolvers are not obsolete but they take a definite backseat to self-loading pistols in today's world.

Just like when the FN High Power was discontinued, there are decades of production on the market. If you want a GP100 or an SP101, you won't have any trouble finding examples for years to come.

Something to do with Beretta owning 25% of Ruger now?

Always thought a GP100 would be my first 357 revolver.
Guess the used market is going to be the way, if/when I'm ready.

I suspect to concentrate production on the models that sell best and make them the most money. Isn't that the premise behind the 80/20 rule?

Revolvers are the only handguns in Ruger's product portfolio that really interest me. And I know I'm not the only out here like that. That said, I already have the ones I want, so I guess I'm not helping their bottom line anymore. Still, seems like an odd decision to discontinue the only thing that really sets them apart.

Since the official phrasing from Ruger was "suspended from production indefinitely" (or something like that), I'm wondering if maybe the dealers have a little too much on the shelf and just want to clear out some inventory.

I wonder how long until Ruger no longer provides service on their canceled revolvers, like they did long ago with the Sixes.

Hopefully this is just an inventory clearing move, then they resume production. What else does Ruger make that's interesting lately other than lever guns, revolvers, and minis? LCP? This is not good news.

Ruger has been racing to catch up with the likes of Remington and Savage for years. Time to stop circling it and go down the drain. You already drove away a large portion of your long time customers with poor quality control and awful fit and finish. Keep pumping out ugly plastic junk and be rid of the rest of them too.

There's also been rumors/talks of Beretta doing a hostile takeover of Ruger if their sales don't improve.

It's also possible that at some point not too far down the road, Ruger will introduce newer versions of the GP100 and SP101. Slight beefing up of the frame and cylinder, strengthening of the locking system, and the "post" design replacing the standard grip frame of the Security Six et al series, is how we got the GP100.

However, in that case, there was about a three year overlap in production, with the older series being discontinued altogether in 1988.

^^^If that’s to be the case, I sincerely hope they don’t do that sleeved barrel nonsense that they did with the Redhawks.
