While I would have admired the Colt's and Smiths, I figure I would have been doing well to afford an Iver Johnson. More likely a store brand .32.

The colt new service came out in '98 and that's what I'd have.

I'd go with the guns for which ammo would have been most readily available at the time:

Handgun: Colt SAA in 45 Colt
Rifle/Carbine: Winchester 94 Carbine in 30-30

If I wanted to use the same cartridge:

Colt SAA and Winchester 92 both in 44-40

It's not practical I suppose, but I'd want one of those sawed-off lever action rifles like Josh Randall / Steve McQueen carried in "Wanted Dead or Alive."

Of course, given my ethnicity, physique and eyesight, what I'd best be carrying in 1898 would be needles and thread.

Wasn’t this thread started in 1898? Razz

As much as I want to say something cool like a C96 the reality is I am fairly conservative so likely a Win 92 lever and one of the more proven revolvers, but I like the Schofield for ease of loading/unloading. A “street howitzer” would have to be in the mix of course. Smile

Unless I was as broke as I am now, I'd try to lay hands on either a Remington 1890 or 1875. I always thought I'd be tickled with the .44WCF, but after reading Hatcher's writings, I dunno. He says the .44WCF never could work up the same level of accuracy as the .45US, .45S&W, .44Russian, and maybe some others.
