addicted to trailing-throttle oversteer |
In handling the couple that we got in, I think they're likely better than base stock 320s (I've not shot one) but they certainly don't feel like anything that would've come out of the old Mastershop. Their trigger actions were inconsistent between the two; one was ok and maybe a bit better than base 320 expectations but the other was literally a 'clunker' (the feedback, both auditory and tactile, was a 'clunk' when the trigger broke during dry fire). Didn't show well, that latter one. The post upgrade 320 triggers really don't seem particularly special to me, and the X5 examples that I've handled so far convey the same feeling. A Walther Q5 is much the same to me; its trigger isn't that much better than a bone stock PPQ's. Neither trigger feels better than that of a $300+ Canik's. Overall production quality feels very polymer striker typical; not really any more precision fit than the base models like the sort of difference that you'd find between a X-Five Allround over a production P226 (particularly an Exeter-made P226), but also I recognize that SIG doesn't price the X5 like a Mastershop X-Five either. That relative lack of price difference matters in what a body can do to make a gun more special. While the 320 X5 is still a significant percentage hike up in price from the a standard 320F, it does offer upgrades that seem appropriate and perhaps even a bargain for its price of admission. I just wish SIG NH hadn't been so brash about diluting the X-Five brand. There were certain expectations associated with using that name, none of which was actually met in my mind. Instead this seems more in line with S&W's M&P vs M&P Pro.

Behold my Radiance! |
The P320X5 was designed for competitive shooting, and it is invariably most positively assessed and compared to other pistols by those with the interest and skill to know what it is capable of. In the hands of top shooters like Sgt. Patrick Franks or Max Michel the P320X5 has outcompeted both polymer and metal-framed Production and Carry Optics guns. Sgt. Franks has fired a number of new NRA AP/Production record scores which exceed Metallic scores fired by the best shooters on Earth with the finest 1911’s made. This gun exceeds the high expectations we placed in it when Ron signed off on the concept in 2014. Yeah, but it feels “plasticky” and SIG calls it an X5. Fair enough. For pride of ownership, nothing beats a temperamental, extremely expensive German pistol which isn’t suited to our sports. Fact is, practically speaking these things shoot just about as well as the typical Master Shop gun, and they run. For $129 and 20 minutes following Alma’s video, you can have a better trigger than is available on any other pistol of it’s type. People who shoot, they get it. -Bruce Designer and custom pistolsmith at Grayguns Inc. This is oh, so true and I'll take my P320 X5's for competition over my old X5 Allrounds any day. In fact the Allrounds were so unreliable that I sold them both.

Really, mine ran like a clock. I needed cash, and sold it to a friend. I'll bet he's put 10K through it, without a hitch.

Mine did for awhile as well and then developed the dreaded extraction issues. The issue seemed to be resolved after a trip to the secret volcano base but I never did trust them in matches. After I started using the base P320 and then the X5 I decided to just get rid of them.

Many of us have had an Allround fail. Bruce has rebuilt many, including his own. My faith in the platform abruptly ended when it would no longer feed while at a major, and relatively expensive, match. Bruce himself worked on the gun with a number of spare parts but could not get it back up until it went home with him for some welding. At the time Bruce's sentiment was "it's only a matter of time" regarding the X-Five series and its failures. I'm glad some have had better luck. We have not seen such failures in the P320 variant. So perhaps it is not deserving of the X-Five designation. -Daniel

Shot one last weekend. Crazy accurate. Groups were half the size of every other pistol I shot. ----------------------------------------- Roll Tide! Glock Certified Armorer NRA Certified Firearms Instructor
