I'd also be interested in knowing what sort of sacrifice going to a 3.8" barrel is for your standard 180gr loading. Seems like a big cut down from the standard 5" in the P320 and P220.

If it starts behaving like .40 cal that would be lame.

^This. It’s a nice concept, but what’s the ballistic debt from shortening the barrel?

It will be fine. The Glock 29 has a similar barrel length and it doesn't give up much ballistically when compared to the Glock 20.

TFB: Glock 20 vs Glock 29 Ballistic Test

Here's the summation from the attached article, showing the fps difference when these loads were tested in both pistols.

175 grain critical duty 26.8 fps
Ventura Heritage 180 grain jhp 67.2 fps
Underwood 220 grain 38.6 fps
Lehigh 140 grain Xtreme penetrator 65.2 fps
HSM 180 grain uhp 28.4 fps
LAX 180 grain FMJ 55.2 fps

I wonder how the comp will perform with hard cast bullets.

It won’t be worth squat if SIG hasn’t fixed the mag issues. They’ve had well over a year.

Hadn’t heard about that.

A regular compact barrel for the P320 is 3.9" and this one is 3.8". I'll bet you they made it that way so you couldn't use that barrel with a Compact P320 .40S&W slide. Then again, it's supposed to be a "Bull" barrel so it's probably to big to fit in a .40S&W slide anyway.

No interest. Wake me when they make a Tungsten infused frame for the Xten.

Hadn’t heard about that.

Loaded mags could be turned upside down and 6-8 bullets would trickle out. The rest were jammed in there, at the level of the magazine release cuts. Mostly wide mouth HPs or flat faced cast lead.
I had one. S&B jacketed range ammo ran fine. S&B hollow points jammed. Sig counseled inverting the mags, tapping them, other wizardry.
After 6 months of that horseshit I swapped it for a 220 Legion.

If they offered a frame without rails, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Already been considering one, but a frame without rails would be the clincher.

I do think it feels fantastic in the hand. I'm curious about how it would carry, or whether I would consider it for carry.

It's a P320. I imagine with a little judicious use of a dremel and some sandpaper the rail could be dispensed with if you absolutely cannot abide its presence. At worst you'd only be out a $40 grip module.

Honestly, I used to feel the same, but haven't found the rail to be an issue at all on my 92X or P220 Compact. The P320 is a plastic pistol, and as such I object even less to the rail as there were no classic lines to spoil to start with.

Yeah, but are there available frames for the X-TEN? It is my understanding that they're different from the standard X-series frames.

Phone's ringing, Dude.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe they are compatible with any .45 P320 grip module. This would seem to indicate such:

Sig sells the full size XTEN grip module on their site. It's $70 though, not $40. If you were going to file off the rail anyway, you could shorten the dust cover to match the length of the compact slide too.

So, I'm curious what exactly constitutes the "X" designation? The grip module; the flat trigger? What exactly? Is this consistent across all the "X" designated guns?

Opinions welcome.

Pretty much, at least so far as the P320 is concerned. I can't say definitively, but I think the X guns are mostly all optic cut as well.

The X designator used to mean something special when applied to the Classic P-Series (X5, X6, etc), as those were actually semi-custom, hand-fitted guns. With the P320 they watered it down to mean basically the exact same gun but with a different grip module and trigger shoe. I personally wish they'd give it a rest, particularly because I can't stand the blocky X-Grip and flat trigger...the last one I got I swapped both out for standard parts before I even took it to the range.

Go to the P320 page on the Sig Sauer website and look at all the variations to see what's an Xseries and what isn't. It's very convoluted.

I think the X frame on the Xten pistols is different than the regular X frame on the 9mm pistols in that it doesn't have that bump out around the beavertail on the rear of the module. That may affect how the grip feels in your hand. However you are limited to the one grip size for the Xten, no Small or Large variations appear to be available.

For the P320, the X designation started with the updated frame and straight trigger as opposed to the P250 left over parts. Or in other words, what Sig should have done in the first place.

Yup. 'X' guns and grip modules have slab-sided grips. Trigger assemblies have straight, flat cross-section shoes. Currently 'X' guns come optic-ready and though my memory is a bit sketchy, I think that an optic cut was always available the X-series P320s although I do remember that the configuration of the slide milling was modified at least once along the way.

I am interested in one, but I just picked up a Glock G20 Gen 5 MOS at about half the price. I will wait until the bugs and greed are sifted out.

I shot one today -- best shooting 10mm I have shot. Only one session, and 100 rounds but no issues. Ran 20 Underwood 200 hard cast, 20 Underwood Xtreme penetrators, 20 Cutting Edge 190 grain, and the rest S&B 180. Shot support hand only, limp wristing the Cutting Edge and hard cast loads, and couldn't induce a stoppage. The gun shoots very flat.

I mounted an EPS red fit with a CHPWS plate just now, and plan to do some more testing. The ballistics testing I saw, showed a 60 fps velocity loss over the five inch X Ten. For woods defense, which is close shooting, and closer yet on every successive shot, I think the velocity loss is a reasonable trade off for a compact, flat shooting pistol. A small comp makes a lot of sense on a 10mm, especially with a fast load like the Underwood Xtreme penetrator, which are advertised at 1,500 fps.
