BostonBBopIncreasing capacity in pre-ban p226 mags? Follower?
Hi folks! I was wondering about the ability to increase the capacity of a pre-ban p226 Sig magazine, the 15 or 20 round ones with the side dimples and the dovetail back.
With the dimples I figure you can't do the usual baseplate extension, but I had someone tell me that if I used a newer follower I would get +2 capacity.
Is that true? Just get the current sig p226 follower?
Anything else I can do?
Thanks!

Mustang-PaPaHaven't entertained this in awhile but back in the day it was the mec-gar followers that allowed for the extra rds.
At that time mec-gar made sig branded mags and the mec-gar branded and sold mags held more rds with the followers being different.
I have not kept up with current offerings though.

BostonBBopThanks. I guess I will just have to try one and see what happens.

12131Yes, chop off the long legs of the follower, and you increase the capacity by two. That's what Mec-Gar did. Their 15-rounder became 17-rounder.

cyberiadI haven't really looked but it might be difficult to buy just a Sig or Mec-Gar follower by itself (assuming you want to preserve your original follower).
The 'easy path' is to buy Mec-gar 18 round magazines and add their 'IFS' kit to make a 19 round magazine if you want the highest capacity possible but I definitely see not wanting to spend the money.

The easier path would be just buy the already made 20-rounder (18 Plus2) for $31.95 at
Greg Cote. Making it yourself would cost you $39.90 (
$26.95 for the 18-rd mag at Greg Cote plus
$12.95 for the Plus2 base at Mec-Gar).

12131Here is how the Germans made the 25-rounder (from 20) for their X5 Open. Chopped off the follower's legs a little, shortened the spring and added the Plus2 base.

darkest2000could you just buy pre-ban 20rd mags? I believe those do exist if you're legally stuck with pre-1994 mags.

Yeah, but those "SWAT" mags are super pricey and stick out from the bottom quite a bit. The one in the bottom in the above post is the SWAT mag.

gearhoundsIf just having higher capacity is the desired effect, just buy Mecgar mags or try and source some Tac-ops 20 rounders. The Mecgars are a good bit cheaper than Sig factory 20 round mags, and are of excellent quality. While Mecgars have moved up in price, they are not too bad if you look around. These 18 round mags are nice because they don’t protrude too far beyond flush.
https://gunmagwarehouse.com/me...-round-magazine.htmlIf you don’t mind the extension, these are a pretty good deal for 20 round mags.

BostonBBopThanks for the photo Q! I will try a follower from my 10 round mec-gar magazines in a pre-ban and reply with results.

True. I don't like the extended ones myself so forgot about them in my reply.

BostonBBopI'm in MA, so can't buy a mag over 10 rounds made after September 1994.
