Depends what you are looking to upgrade. Upgrades on my gen 5 are a Kiral one piece backstrap, Overwatch Precision TAC trigger with their minus one connector and a Strike industries hybrid mag release. All were drop in and make no major changes to system. The trigger weight is slightly less and much smoother. Edit to add: Suppressor sights due to mounted Holosun 507c. Tritium front with blacked out rear. “Posterity! You will never know how much it cost the present Generation to preserve your Freedom! I hope you will make good use of it. My first thing for any Glock is Ameriglo Hacks and the Glock Performance Trigger. Not minority enough!

Steel sights. They don't even need to be night sights, but they can't hurt. You want steel sights, and the non-night sight versions can be had inexpensively. I wouldn't do anything else to the pistol until you've shot it a bit- at least a thousand rounds. You might consider a grip applique. I like Talon Grips

I put an Apex trigger and a Ghost connector in my Gen 5. Otherwise, it’s completely stock. It’s a great shooter. _________________________ 2nd Amendment Defender The Second Amendment is not about hunting or sport shooting.

Para has it. The Gen 5 guns are so good out of the box that the only thing they need is steel sights. I wasn’t wholly convinced of even that until I went to change out the OEM sights on my 17 for some Truglos and managed to pop the rear sight out of the dovetail by giving it a tap with a mallet. It was just sheer curiosity about how fragile they actually are. I’m a believer now. Change the sights, shoot the crap out of it and see what you think could actually be better. After a thousand rounds, the factory trigger ought be pretty darn smooth, and what could be better, you can accomplish with some metal polish and a dremel with a buffing wheel head. Even the OEM triggers on the Gen 5’s are pretty good. ______________________________________________ "If the truth shall kill them, let them die.” Endeavoring to master the subtle art of the grapefruit spoon.

A good set of night sights, maybe a good light. That’s all you need. A few extra Glock mags, and ammo, ammo and more ammo. I was never one to get enhanced triggers, plugs, and a whole bunch of other stuff. The 5th gen triggers are great out of the box. If you’re going to carry it, find a holster you like. Talon grips are great, handelit grips are too. https://www.handleitgrips.com/...gory/glock-gun-grips Depending on how many guns you want to do, there’s 3M No-Skid tape for stairs and ladders, about $12 a roll at Home Depot / Lowes. Get a good pair of scissors and you’re good to go. I had mine stippled years ago. ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. Leave it alone. Seriously. Tons of "my Glock doesnt work" post all over the internet after home bubba gunsmithing goes wrong. The answer is to always put it back to stock and quick screwing with it. Its a self defense pistol. The trigger is fine and acceptable. It doesn't need to be a target 1911 trigger. Sights and a mounted flashlight and done. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

First thing I do is put Trijicon HD sights on it and a grip plug. That’s it. Ammo and mags and a holster. ----------------------------------------- Roll Tide! Glock Certified Armorer NRA Certified Firearms Instructor

If you haven't read the recent thread about "This Glock failed the drop test" (https://sigforum.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/430601935/m/4240013615) it may be helpful in thinking about what to look for if adding aftermarket parts. I think it's a warning against a "Glocks are like Legos" mentality. Edit: ok, didn't post the link correctly. but the thread is currently not far down the first page here.

Fighting the good fight![]() |
Here's what I always add to every new Glock: 1) A quality holster and magazine holder, if you don't already have those. (Though you can omit these if it's strictly going to be a home defense gun.) 2) Extra mags. 5 mags total is a good starting point/minimum. 3) A quality mounted flashlight. I like the Streamlight TLR2-HL or TLR-7X, but they just released slightly larger and brighter HL-X versions of both models that are worth checking out as well, as long as you're not trying to retain legacy TLR1/TLR7 holster compatibility. 4) A quality optic with blank steel sights, or quality night sights if you're not going to be using an optic. I like the Holosun SCS MOS optic for non-duty use like concealed carry or bedside protection, since it's the lowest profile, doesn't require an adapter plate, and can cowitness with normal height sights. But the RMR is the gold standard for duty use/hard use for a reason. For blank sights to pair with an optic, I like the Ameriglo Range series and the Warren Tactical Sevigny sights. You will likely need taller height sights if going with an optic other than a SCS MOS. Or if going with just night sights and no optic, I like Trijicon HDR and Ameriglo Trooper. Then a couple suggestions for completely optional upgrades, which are not a requirement by any stretch of the imagination, but are nice to have (though this is subjective and comes down to personal preference): - Glock performance trigger, which is a factory trigger upgrade option. - TangoDown Vickers extended mag release, which I prefer to both the factory stock mag release as well as the factory extended mag release. It's about halfway between the two in size, and has rounded edges.

If it's his first Glock, he should shoot it a bit before mounting a light. Also, for the same reason, I wouldn't make any immediate changes to the trigger. Get familiar with the way the pistol shoots stock.

I have a tungsten guide rod on my gen 4 & gen 5. Not needed by any means, but I prefer the change in balance. My sense is the follow up shot is slightly easier/quicker but I don’t have data to verify that suspicion empirically. I did not add this to my issued gun. Other than that (and sights already mentioned) my glocks are stock. Of note on sights: man I really tried to get into red dots. I just can’t. I shoot fine with irons sights (we’re talking pistols here) but try as I might I wasn’t as natural with a red dot. More practice would probably work, but the additional fraction of a second it takes me to find the dot was unacceptable. Never had an instructor teach me so perhaps there’s something I’m missing, but all my pistols are back to glow in the dark iron sights.
