TommydoggImporter rollmarks?
Is it legal to remove rollmarks on an imported surplus gun? Thanks!

JohnnyDI bet a bunch of M1 Garands have had the stamp on the barrel removed. If it's your property I see no reason why not.
Let's see what others say.

FenderBenderIt seems yes, but if they've put a serial number on there not that.

GaryBFIf not illegal, it seems ethically questionable and deceitful.

parabellumAny of you sumbitches who've taken that little tag off your mattress know the sound of the jackboot in the night.
OK, maybe that answer's a bit vague.

egregoreYou aren't altering or removing the serial number. This is the only thing the law cares about.

TommydoggNot altering a serial number or the manufacturer or trying to deceive anyone. My descendants would probably know where it came from anyway.

PGTmy understanding is that the gun must show manufacturer and importer so likely no kosher. That said, its probably not as serious as removing a serial number.
I've got several CAI guns I'd prefer more discrete markings on. Worth removing, remarking and refinishing? some, yes, actually (CZ-83 in 32acp).

12131It's the importer marking, not the serial number, so file away.

Don't let this get out! This past weekend I went through my garage and tore those big ole white tags off of every electrical tool, box fan power cord and extension cord that I have! You know what? It felt good!

4MUL8RThreads seen on many other forums seem to offer this logic...
1. The importer must be identified by markings of a certain size and depth.
2. NFA section 5861g states that markings required by the statute cannot be removed. The text reads "serial number or other identification of a firearm required by this chapter"
3. The importer info is likely considered "other identification." Therefore, it is unlawful to remove it.
