Is it legal to remove rollmarks on an imported surplus gun? Thanks! ___________________________ "I Get It Now" Beth Greene

I bet a bunch of M1 Garands have had the stamp on the barrel removed. If it's your property I see no reason why not. Let's see what others say. ----------------------------------- USAF/ANG Retired

If not illegal, it seems ethically questionable and deceitful.

Any of you sumbitches who've taken that little tag off your mattress know the sound of the jackboot in the night. OK, maybe that answer's a bit vague. ____________________________________________________ "I am your retribution." - Donald Trump, speech at CPAC, March 4, 2023

You aren't altering or removing the serial number. This is the only thing the law cares about.

Not altering a serial number or the manufacturer or trying to deceive anyone. My descendants would probably know where it came from anyway. ___________________________ "I Get It Now" Beth Greene

my understanding is that the gun must show manufacturer and importer so likely no kosher. That said, its probably not as serious as removing a serial number. I've got several CAI guns I'd prefer more discrete markings on. Worth removing, remarking and refinishing? some, yes, actually (CZ-83 in 32acp).

It's the importer marking, not the serial number, so file away. Q

Don't let this get out! This past weekend I went through my garage and tore those big ole white tags off of every electrical tool, box fan power cord and extension cord that I have! You know what? It felt good! ___________________________ "I Get It Now" Beth Greene

Threads seen on many other forums seem to offer this logic... 1. The importer must be identified by markings of a certain size and depth. 2. NFA section 5861g states that markings required by the statute cannot be removed. The text reads "serial number or other identification of a firearm required by this chapter" 3. The importer info is likely considered "other identification." Therefore, it is unlawful to remove it. ------- Trying to simplify my life...

The Mattress Police SWAT Team will explain it to you after you're subdued and in custody. ____________________________________________________ "I am your retribution." - Donald Trump, speech at CPAC, March 4, 2023
