I have an unfired stainless S&W 4506 45acp that I am thinking of trading for a new 610 Lipsey. Any thoughts on the 610 Lispey S&W?

I would go with 44 mag.

I don't know your recoil tolerance, but I would think the 10mm would get shot more.

I would have to vote 10mm; ammo costs may be less, and range time loads easier to find. I have a 629 in 44, and finding 44 Special for practice can be exasperating. Cowboy loads are frowned on at my indoor ranges available which makes it worse. Usually that's all I can find when it's available on store shelves.

The only 610 I see from Lipsey's is the Mountain Gun Model.

It's a very informative post from a Member here that bought three new S & W revolvers.

Me personally, anything a 10mm revolver can do, a .44 Magnum revolver can do better.
For you? You'll have to decide what you are planning to point the business end of the revolver at. Social Work? CCW? Dangerous game defense? Hunting?
Are you a reloader? That may make the decision simple for you if you are not reloading your own ammo.

I worked up a low power .44 Magnum reload using a Berry's Bullets plated projectile. It's slightly higher performance than factory .45 ACP Ball Ammo.
You could easily shoot 500 of them in a single range session without feeling beat up.
Or you can shoot Underwood, Buffalo Bore, or HSM knuckle busters.
.44 Magnum is by far the more versatile cartridge, IF you reload.

I'll find out this week - have one inbound currently. Being a new caliber Mountain Gun and without the moronic safety lock the last 25 years brought us, it'll fit in with all my late 90's Mountain Guns, just different grips.

Go with the 44. There is a wider variety of ammo, and 44 is easy to reload.

Yes, mine is the Lipsey's 10mm MG with wood grips that are currently available. It shows delivered to my FFL, so hopefully it'll be in my hands later this week. I have to leave town next week, so it'll be closer to two weeks before I can burn a few boxes through it.

I have one of the 610 Mountain Guns from Lipsey's. It is rapidly becoming one of my favorite revolvers. That said there's a lot of good, bad and ugly with it.

The good - really fun revolver to shoot. Moon clips make it even more fun. I like shooting a big N-Frame revolvers and not getting beaten up by recoil. For me it's practice for shooting my 629's and 329. It looks cool, like the Smtih revolvers from days gone past. The balance with the light tapered barrel is really good as well. 10mm also provides a lot of versatility from lightly loaded target ammo to heavy hardcast, "Bear Rounds". Accuracy is phenomenal, it may be my most accurate revolver.

The bad - the grips suck! The fitment on mine was terrible with sharp edges that did not match up to the steel backstrap of the gun. It drew blood from the web of my hand during the first range trip. Fitted them with some sanding and refinished them in tongue oil, they no longer draw blood but they just aren't comfortable to shoot. Factory target, Hogue and Ahrends wood grips work much better for me. Right now it wears the new style Smith & Wesson rubber grips that wrap around the backstrap. They're ugly but they work.

The ugly - Smith & Wesson's current quality control. Mine had to be sent back to Smith & Wesson for light primer strikes. First trip to the range every pull of the trigger went bang. Second trip to the range started getting light primer strikes. Returning home and cleaning it I found the strain screw was loose and put 3 full turns on it to tighten it up. Thought it was fixed but a third trip to the range proved otherwise and still experienced light strikes. Sent back to Smith for warranty repair, they performed an extensive rework and it has been 100% since but has a slightly heavier trigger pull.

Ask yourself why you want it and what you plan to do with it. For me it's a fun range toy. If I need something to carry in the woods, I prefer the power of the .44 over the 10mm. If I want to carry a 10mm revolver, my 3" Ruger GP100 has a much smaller footprint and easier to carry.

There's a lot out there - for 10mm, most 200gr solids are plenty fine. Buffalo Bore was always a favorite in various calibers.

My new favorite specific to the 10mm is the Federal Premium Syntech 200gr solid. It's a polymer coated solid that has proven reliable in feeding all the time in my Glock, Sig P220 and Colt Delta Elite. I use it sparingly just to test reliability in the Glock and Colt, as it pounds them pretty hard. The heavy and overbuilt stainless P220 can soak up all you want to give it with the hot stuff.

For Bear loads, the right bullet and reliability is the only concern. When traveling, I often take magazines loaded with both the bear loads and then personal defense loads and just use the same gun. The hollow point personal defense loads aren't optimal for bears and on the flip side, the bear solids will punch through a person, the wall and the three other people behind that, which isn't optimal either. Just match your load to your situation.

I was wondering about the wood and the decision for them to go with it, since every other Mountain Gun in history has come with Hogue rubbers. I guess I'll find out how I like them later today when I pick mine up.

The quality issues I've been hearing from Smith over the past year or so almost made me skip this purchase. I'm just a Mountain Gun whore, so I decided to take the chance. I hope it's not one that has to go back for work.

I agree here. Nothing against the wheel gun. I like them, have several in 38 and 22 caliber as thats what fits my needs. I have also heard of qc issues, such as mentioned above, but have not run into any myself. My main heavy guns are autos, excluding one super blackhawk.

Keep the 4506 and buy the other out right!
