Anyone running sightless? Login/Join

I'm running a lightly modified P320 XFive SXG with removed factory sights... mainly for speed and ease of removing from a drop holster. My main method of sighting targets is a Romeo3 Max Pro. For defensive use a very low profile laser site that does not have protusions to catch the holster.

Just wondering if anyone else is as daring as I?

I'm new here, and find the site options limiting me on setting up my profile.

My mods are competition legal.

Wolff progressive recoil spring, M-Carbo 2.5 lbs trigger spring upgrade, +3 base plate on 21 round magazines with Grams +1 spring follower, DYI trigger return spacer to bypass trigger bar, and a Gas Pedal CG. On the wait list a threaded barrel for fun times.

Nice!

I have the MP320 with flip up sights and sometimes run a few magazines with the sights down.

It points very well, I can stay on target better with them up, but if I need it fast enough I may not have time to aim.

Welcome to the forum!

So, you’re not really going “sightless” but just using different sighting technology. Wink

Did that with my Gen 5 17 before I sold it. Nothing but an SRO on a cut slide, so pretty low mount height. It was fast, but I only used it for USPSA.

Fine for gun games where if your optic dies or falls off, worst case you just lose a match. Not something I'd do in the real world, though. I also reference them daily to rough-confirm my optic zero. I've never found any disadvantage to having them on there, either (apart from the initial purchase cost), so I'd rather have them than not.

Ditto. And considering I use plain black backuo iron sights on my optic equipped pistols, it's like $30 for a set, so even the initial purchase cost is minimal.

Super duper cheap insurance, with no downsides.

Back when the P228 was the pistol I shot and carried the most, I had two of them that were in use. At one point in time, one of them had its sights taken off to practice sightless “point-and-shoot” shooting. I kept it that way for a while, but then only carried the other one (with the sights) during that time.

Shades of the Wild West gunfighter filing his front sight for faster draw from a flabby leather holster.

A friend has no sights on his daily dot gun, says that if the light goes out, he can frame an opponent in the window well enough at typical defensive engagement ranges.

No different than folks running their ARs with only RDS and no iron sights.

you can skip the laser for defensive use
learn to use your optic body as a sight in case your battery runs out. If you know the holdover, using the top of the optic or a corner works fine.

So I have irons on all my dot guns and will not have it any other way. That said, truth be told, if the dot craps out in any kind of serious social situation I am not going to have the training/mindset etc. to smoothly transition to irons and I will be just using the dot housing or the dot glass as a big ass ghost ring if you will. I’ve done some practice doing this and out to 7-10 yards it works fairly well (or I could just be “point shooting” fairly well.

I am in NO WAY suggesting going without a backup iron setup just saying that I would likely only be able to use them if I had some time/distance/cover. Now I’m just an idjit amateur and in no way, shape or form a gunfighter so YMMV.

My red AR’s have always had fixed A frame front sights. The red dot cowitnesses on the top of the front sight post. Worst case scenario and the Aimpoint dies, I still have a big rear ghost ring and a front sight. I was also a quick check to see if anything got seriously whacked out of alignment.

Dunno if that’s feasible on a handgun. Don’t use them. Don’t know enough anout them. Maybe a suppressor height front sight.

Lasers are worthless for me. I can’t see the damn thing out here in the Nevada sun. At best, I can aim it at the ground in front of me and run it up into the target. If it was powerful enough for me to see, under any conditions, I likely wouldn’t have to shoot as the laser would already have burned a hole through my adversary.

Or an AR with any kind of scope and no iron sights.

Well, I took a few suggestions and adjusted my shooting stance to place eye and gun near 0° of the intendend bullseye plane. When I shoot the red dot is ghosting on my subject. I think the smaller and brighter the dot the better at ghosting with a high accuracy. Antique guns had no sights like we have. You would be lucky to have a ball stud at the end of the barrel. I figure iron sights are needed for high levels of accuracy if without scope. Red dot allows quicker targeting without needing to focus on the sight, being your eyes are fully focused on the subject in a 75/25 manner.

I am forced ambidextrous. Left handed by nature trained to shoot right handed by grandfather, who would not accept lefty, let alone had only right handed fire arms.

Try shooting left handed having to make your brain correct eye dominance. You would be forcing your brain to correct eye dominance issues. As you shout not squint or close one eye with a red dot.

I can't fathom co-witnessing to target. They contradict each other. One requires squinting an eye and focusing on sights over target, the other requiring open eyes on subject and aquiring target.

I think those who have difficulty with red dot superimposison haven't trained there dominant eye independently like the military? Maybe someone familiar with military optics as a gunner or pilot can elaborate on my reasoning.

Did you put some kind of filler piece into the dovetails? Seems like that would be not only ugly but a bit snaggy or sharp.

I have a micro red dot on my carry pistol but saw no reason to remove the irons. It's not like they get in the way.

The sightless barrel looks better without the protruding sight. Dovetail does not snag or is sharp. Since the Romeo 3 Max Pro removes rear sight assembly, the gun nor its user is not confused about its gender.

I can include any slide action model. Just was being fair to making a thread on what I have as a handgun.

I have made my choice in removal based on 50/50 ascetics and functional characteristics. Smoother holstering and less distraction with brain trying to utilize front sight from years of automatic targeting response.

Every sight has its plus and minuses, along with user preference.

Some like driving a Jeep while others like driving a Raptor. Both get you around, just a matter of comfort with being basic over the comfort of more advanced.
