I'm driving down to Florida in a couple of months and am undecided about which gun to take, my 228 or my G19. I just purchased some of Mec Gars 18 round mags and they work fine. It really makes the 228 a formidable pistol with a payload of 19 rounds but the G19 is lighter and may conceal better. I shoot both equally well. What say you.

Why on Earth do you want help deciding this? Do you need help on what clothes to pack also?

The Glock will carry a little better and handle the disgusting Florida climate more robustly. I have to make sure I oil the crap out of my grip screws, controls, and slide before I take my P245 down there, otherwise I start seeing surface rusting on the parts that come in contact with sweat.

That said, I still carry my Sig when I go because Glocks don't point naturally for me and the Sig takes a lot less concentration to shoot well. You said that's not an issue for you, so I imagine you'd be fine with either. If that were the case for me I'd probably take the Glock.

I vote for the lighter G-19. I have one but rarely carry it now that my 43X has the S15 mags. I've never owned or fired a 228, though I was issued a 229/40 back when I was a reserve LEO.

I assume you'll be wearing shorts in FL, the G-19 - with a spare mag - will work with www.smartcarry.com or a similar holster.

When I travel from my Free State to another Free State (looking at you Florida) I EDC my normal seasonal EDC, because I plan on EDCing while there. My Wife also EDCs her normal EDC when EDCing in other Free States.

I do take an additional firearm with me, since it usually too far to drive home and get another, if needed. When heading to Florida, I always pack a G19 or G23 for fishing. Have never been pulled overboard. YET. If I do, I would prefer it be a Glock. If I was heading North, I would pack a suitable larger firearm for outdoors activity.

Having said that, I usually EDC my normal EDC when heading to Free States.

You’re gonna sweat your ass off. That’s gotta be your metric. I’ll sweat all over, and into a Glock and not care. I rusted a P229 mag catch in place once.

Here while back, I got real wrapped up on weight. The first half of my life, I never wore shorts. Now, if possible, I’d wear shorts to work. Somehow, I convinced myself that I should seek out the lightest mid sized pistol I could, iron sights only, to wear in shorts.

I bought a postal scale, weighed various guns loaded and unloaded. I found that the addition of a RMR only adds about an ounce. I also found that as long as you aren’t carrying a 226 LDC, the weight between the usual suspects of mid size carry guns really doesn’t matter. Holster selection and type of carry is really what matters.

I ended up going with my usual 19 RMR that I carry every day at work. Lighter guns really didn’t get me anything. The weight difference in a 229 Romeo 1 carries just fine for me too. I put it in a holster, put it on and forget it just like I do a 19.

Holster choice to me is what levels the playing field.

Let's say you have the misfortune of being involved in a self-defense use. Which one do you want to say bye-bye to (at least temporarily hopefully).

One other consideration...it's easier to get high-cap mags for the Glock.

When I go to Florida, we usually stay at the in-laws', so I can take as many guns as I want, and usually do because my FIL likes to go shooting. But if I'm travelling and camping or staying in hotels, I usually only take one gun because I don't like having to leave unsecured weapons in my vehicle or camper while I'm out doing stuff. The last thing I want to do is be responsible for arming the shitheads of this world.

My MO in those situations is to take a bunch of loaded mags. I keep some big ones in the door pocket of my vehicle, a spare or two by my bunk in the camper, and usually an extra in my pack. That way I've got reloads readily available, and plenty of spare mags in case one decides to come apart on me. And if somebody steals my mags, at least they're not getting a gun.

You have to be really confident in the reliability of your handgun if you're only going to travel with one, but I'd be more than comfortable with either the G19 or the P228 in that regard.

Since you asked - Glock 19.

I agree with the others,Glock 19. The Sig is a nice gun, maybe too nice for the Florida heat and sweat. As far as having it gone for a little while in a self-defense situation, a "little while" maybe a relative term, as firearm could be held for a long time and I would hate to have a P228 sitting in jail and rusting/eroding in lock up. A Glock is easy to replace and cheaper.

For a trip to that disgusting fetid swampland, I would leave the P228 at home.

Glock 19: lighter, cheaper mags - easier to get.
