Hey all-

I want to dip my toe in the water of the form 1 process.

I think doing a Mossberg Shockwave to SBS would be pretty straightforward. Has anyone done one? Any advice? Was there something that you learned that might not have been super clear from the form instructions?

I'm going to reduce errors by paying $50 to let Silencershop process it and send it in.

Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams

AFAIK the Shockwave will take any standard Mossberg 590 stock, so yeah it sounds pretty straightforward. I assume you're talking about putting a stock on it, not chopping the barrel any more than it already is.

When I was doing my first and so far only Form 1 earlier this year, I found this page that helped me a lot in filling out the online eForm 1.

Personally, I’d do it myself and save the $50. Silencer Shop can, and has, screwed up people’s Form 1s, and then it’s a hassle to contact them to fix it.

One big tip is that the Model name is exactly what’s engraved on the receiver, not the trade name itself sold under. Unless it specifically says the model name on the receiver is “Shockwave”, don’t put that. If the receiver is engraved with something like “590”, use that. Companies may use the same receiver for different models, but it’s all a “590” (or whatever) to the ATF.

Thanks, Marzy.

I haven't gathered anything except a digital file of my trust. I'll email you and we can maybe set up a time for a quick phone call?
This shotty is my learning project. I have a couple that I want to do, after, if it's as easy as I hope.

Thanks,

Bruce

I haven't done a trust, but I have done many individual Form 1's.

A trust requires every trustee to have an EFT file.

I don't follow lead times currently but recently it was way faster to have an operating gun to F1 it to yourself and then F4 it to the trust as trusts definately take longer.
Only advice I have is don't accept anything in a prefilled drop down box about the gun.

I had to look up "EFT". No, my trust, picture, and prints are on file with Silencershop. I just got back a Form 4 with therm. 3 days. I dunno if they will share a copy of my EFT file with me or if that's a visit to another fingerprinting business. It may be simpler to just pay them the $50.

is a form 4 harder to fill out than a form 1? Are trusts more hassle than they are worth?

The Form 4 is a little easier because the item description is already in the system, so you don’t have to worry about entering incorrect information. If you use eforms, and have the control number from the Form 1, you just enter it and it pulls the existing data on the NFA item from the registry.

Regarding trusts, it depends on what you want the trust for. Having multiple people on the trust allows those people have access to the NFA item. The downside is that you need to provide more information for a trust, including photos, fingerprints, and responsible person questionnaires for each person, and they all have to be checked, instead of just one. Only you can answer if the juice is worth the squeeze for your situation.

You will need to get your fingerprint file (EFT) and photo from a fingerprinting source. My gunshop where I did my first purchase gave me mine on a thumb drive.

Getting back to paying attention to this project.
"Overall length"? How do you measure and where from? If I go with a folding stock do I measure folded or open? What about if I do a 1913 rail on the back with a detachable stock? So many questions just to stay out of prison!

Edit: possibly one of these for old-school flavor https://www.midwayusa.com/prod...006759439?pid=129229

OAL for a SBR is measured from the muzzle to the rear of the stock in the fully extended or unfolded position. That said, the ATF doesn’t care. No one removes muzzle devices to measure, many people swap stocks to different length ones, and some people put down the collapsed length. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble, or even questioned, for the OAL on their SBR paperwork not being 100% accurate. Just put down something close and reasonable, and it will be good.
