Good evening, SF. As usual, I've got questions. Here's the setup: - We've got in mind to prepare a Form 1 for an SBR. - Section 4 asks about the caliber, barrel length, and overall length. - We haven't yet purchased an upper for this rifle, so we can't really answer the length questions. The trust does own a short upper already. Could we measure from that one to derive the length answers? And would that preclude using a different upper later? Thanks again, all. Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around. — — — — — — — — — — — — God bless America.

Put whatever length you think you might want to do. Using an upper you already have is as good as anything. You can freely change lengths from what’s on the Form 1 at any time.

Do you have to notify if you change the length? How do you go about the notification process?

Directly from the Form 1: The registrant must notify the NFA Division in writing, of any change to the description of the firearm(s) in item 4. Whether people do or don’t, that’s their own thing, but this is what it says.

it has been my uderstanding that requirement is for a permenant change. Which is why I have always respected the rule to be able to put it back in the approved configuration. No idea if that's what is the best NFA advice, but its what I do. On a permenant change you notify by sending a letter to the NFA branch. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

So, if we play the semantics game... I could, theoretically, swap uppers at will during a range day, putting the rifle back to the documented configuration when I go putting things away, and not have any hassle about it. Maybe? Yes. If you have a registered SBR AR, say papered for a 5.56mm 10.5” barrel, you could take it to the range with other uppers and swap to your heart’s content. 5.5” 9mm, 8” .300BO, 10” 5.7x28mm…so long as you are not permanently changing the configuration from what was approved. If you decide you never want a 10.5” 5.56mm upper ever again, you can notify the ATF of the permanent modification via letter so they can update the registry.

I don't think its just you swap them at at the range and put it back when you go home. I think you can leave it in whatever configuration you want for however long you want till asked to put it back or you permenentaly decide to change the 'registered' configuration. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

That makes sense.
I like it. Thank you all. Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around. — — — — — — — — — — — — God bless America.

Big thing to remember is that changing the configuration won’t get you prosecuted. That’s all that matters. ________________ People hate you. Train like it.

And that's key. Thank you. Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around. — — — — — — — — — — — — God bless America.

My phone thought has always been this: As long as I still posess the upper from the original registered configuration, I can put it back. I would only bother notifying if I decided it would never again be that configuration and was selling the upper. Bruce "The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams “It is just as difficult and dangerous to try to free a people that wants to remain servile as it is to try to enslave a people that wants to remain free." -Niccolo Machiavelli The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -Mencken
