In a classic case of “wrong tool for the job,” we broke the tip off my Kershaw Leek at work last week.

My boss (now aka: Knifebreaker, haha) is way cool about it, saying, “well, get yourself another and expense it.” I’m happy to buy a new one, but I wonder if there’s any “rehab” I could put this one through instead.

There’s roughly an eighth-inch broken off, I think. Could a fella with some talent grind it and put a new point on? Or wouuld that just be a) goofy, b) not worth the effort, or c) something even worse?

Been there, done that (a couple of times, unfortunately). Just get a file and reshape the tip to a point by filing the top edge, bottom edge, or both, then resharpen.

Looks like Kershaw will replace the blade for
$25 plus maybe $7 shipping?

Kershaw warranty info

I broke the tip off my Spyderco Military.

I got some 3M Wet / Dry Sandpaper and slowly brought the front / top drop down and reprofiled the tip.

Carefully did it with the sandpaper on an aluminum plate.

Wow, I didn’t know they’d replace a blade. That’s perfect! Thank you, Herkdriver.

I’d try filing and reshaping, but I’m sure I could "ruin it real good, real quick.” Big Grin

Several years back I loaned my ZDP-189 Leek to a buddy of mine. Same thing happened, he broke the tip off. Being a good Dude, he sent it back to Kershaw for replacement. They sent it back with a new blade but with 420 or whatever normal steel they made them with at the time.

OBVIOUSLY I was none to happy with ZDP-189 being replaced with junk steel. Apparantly ZDP-189 Leek replacement blades were unobtanium. Dunno what my buddy said to Kershaw but they ended up giving me my CHOICE of any knife in the Kershaw line currently available! I ended up the a Leek with normal steel and a really nice high end fixed blade with the best current steel.

I'm a little sad to hear that their customer service is now down to $25 plus $7 shipping. But now that I'm thinking about it my Good friend might have just bought me my choice of any knife in the Kershaw line. He's a top quality person.......... DJ

Just because you can,
doesn't mean you should

I like the idea of learning to re-profile the blade until I looked at the photo in the original post.
Without care to keep the new point low and the lower profile flat, the new tip could create a hazard if it was exposed when the knife was closed.

Haha! Prying is exactly what we were doing.

What makes it funnier is that we knew we were going to break his thin knife in a big fat hurry… so I offered mine. Razz

I found that funny.

Best of both worlds: The organization bought me a new Leek; I'll send the old one down to Kershaw for a new blade. Cool
