Do you allow guns in your workplace or does your employer allow it?

billpoczDo you allow guns in your workplace or does your employer allow it?
I always have wondered what is the exact liability that the company/corporate officers have by posting (or just having) a strict 'No Firearms' policy?
Since the right of personal protection has been removed from those employees (and has been squarely placed on the employer), what is the recourse?
Your question of a policy for firearms once written, might want to be checked and rewritten as a no firearm policy to see if it makes any sense.

KDRIn the office you are allowed if you have CCW. Open carry not permitted.
When on a customer's property we are officially supposed to follow their rules. Unofficially, we have a don't ask don't tell policy about that.
We do have a few sites that we go to that we can't carry under any circumstances (random searches).

arfmelRetired now but I never worked for people who prohibited lawful concealed carry. God bless Texas.

FredwardMy last employer was very reasonable. Their nationwide policy was that they followed the law. If carry was permitted under local law, it was allowed at work unless prohibited by the client's contract.

BigboreshooterI work in a small office - only myself and the owner. I have CC'd every day for over 10 years, and the owner keeps a G19 in his desk.

egregoreMy workplace (small auto repair shop) has an unwritten, informal "guns allowed" policy. I have mine in my tool box. The owner is a rifle and handloading enthusiast. He keeps two pistols in the office. We don't carry on our persons, but not because of any policy. In this business, with a lot of crawling, bending, squatting and climbing, it isn't feasible.

TigerDoreWe allow it. We have several CCW here, including me. Without going through the employee manual, the restrictions are as follows:
1. The person must have a valid concealed carry permit(a state requirement) and a copy of that permit must be on file in their HR records.
2. The gun must remain concealed when the employee is in view of others.

bertoHandbook says no go. It's the least of my worries. The sheriff would need to be on board with me carrying and until I can come up with enough money to get his attention the answer is no.
If you're crafting a work policy you really ought to talk to insurance and lawyer to get your liability questions answered correctly.

PalBefore I retired from my own business I, of course, allowed it. We had some customers that didn't allow on their site but it was kinda don' ask don't tell. Once I was driving a new hire on his route and he askd m about the policy. I couldn't really say no when I had my Sig on my hip!

parabellumYeah, and as a matter of fact, everybody pretty much is required to be drawin' down on everybody else at all times (except during staff meetings). This is how we've had no workplace shootings since last May. No gun? Not pointing at anyone? Well, you're just lookin' to get shot, ain'tcha? Messican standoff = safe work environment.

horsedocAs a business owner I do not infringe on any of my employees God given rights, be it religion or 2A, as long as they don't infringe on others rights or safety.
On a broad note I encourage all my employees to learn how to safely use a firearm. I even have a corporate membership at a close by indoor range I encourage my employees to take advantage of.
I have no specific written policy except for a concealed carry welcome here sign on the front door.

Jimbo54I worked at a family owned company for 41 years before retiring. For most of that time there was no rule against concealed carry. About 15 years ago, the owner decided it was time to hire an HR person because of the growth of the company. We were at around 100 employees at the time and she wrote an employee handbook that banned weapons on the premises.
The owner and I were close and we hunted, fished and shot handguns together for years. He called me and another guy into his office one day and told us that he wanted us to continue to carry on the job. He just said to keep it to ourselves and he would be good with it. That made three of us counting him. He and I both retired at the same time and the kids took over the day by day running of the company that has over 125 employees now. I'm pretty sure that the old mans policy is no more.

feersum dreadnaughta "no firearms" policy somehow got into the employee manual a few years back.
Our President struck it out upon notice - as he carries everywhere.
We don't talk about it officially, and have no requirements. Follow state law for the office, same as anywhere else.

1967GoatI work for a defense contractor. We are not allowed to carry, and it cannot even be in your automobile in the parking lot. We have several SCIFs in the building, and I've had security ask to look inside my backpack as I was leaving the building.
I now work from home, so its a non-issue.

When I was still working (13 years ago) the company policy was no guns on company property, even in the parking lots. I doubt it has changed.
