Great first step. The senate has yet to even present their own proposal, but one of the Rs already said theirs “won’t be as generous”. https://floridaphoenix.com/202...rats%20opposing%20it. But, even if they won’t eliminate 100% of the property taxes, a partial reduction, say 50%, with no future increases, is still a win. Q

What do property taxes go towards in FL? For example, in my state, most of it goes to the school district, a small portion goes to the county government for services and roads, and the other portion goes to the city for services and roads. The state doesn't get any of it. So if the FL state legislature votes to prevent the cities/counties from being able to collect property taxes, how do they intend for the city/county governments to fund their services and infrastructure? Or do a portion of FL property taxes go to the state, and they're just voting to end the collection of the state's portion of property taxes? I'm all for lowering taxes, but not at the cost of stuff like ignoring road maintenance, cutting police/fire services, etc. If anything, the waste and mismanagement of the public schools' portion of tax funding should be the primary target.

Well, and I am no expert, this only applies to your primary residence that you have homesteaded. All commercial properties, all second homes, vacation homes etc will still be taxed. Florida, not for nothing, also has been running at a surplus budget. If any state can do this it will be Florida. I also imagine it would lead to a large movement towards this state. Not that I think that is a great thing but it certainly won’t hurt the states economy. Bottom line. Property tax is bullshit. Always has been. You should actually own property. Not lease it from the state. This is a good thing. The details can be worked out. If any state can do it, this is the one.

Over 70% of my property tax dollars goes towards Education. This is where the most waste is.

This is one thing I don't understand about our country. We managed to successfully privatize healthcare unlike the rest of the developed world so why can't we figure out a way to make families pay directly for their children to attend school rather than tax everyone?

40-42% in my country on average go to schools. I'll take a 60% cut.

X has numerous post about school district admin job growing while student enrollment and teachers decline. Everyone suspects our little podunk district with its over $2 billion budget has lots of $100k plus admin “jobs” doing little more than piddling on the internet or delegating all work to the new assistant to the assistant. “That’s what.” - She

I did the calculations using Grok with my current mortgage and interest rate, and if this passes, my mortgage will go down approximately $350 to $400 a month. I'll take it! Tony. Owner, TonyBen, LLC, Type-07 FFL www.tonybenm14.com (Site under construction). e-mail: tonyben@tonybenm14.com

Everybody complains about the schools but nobody ever shows up for school board meetings, runs for those positions, or shows up to vote in those elections.

I've done it, when they redistricted the area and ruined several A schools by moving kids from the F school nearby it was a shit show, none of the board members showed, the decision was done even though we had close to a 1000 people in the room against it, one woman, Staff was there to let people talk but the School board didn't give one damn. Getting all the illegals out, and their kids out of the schools should free up resources and reduce costs. They are talking about closing 7 schools in Orange county due to the decline. Even though plenty of people are moving here. They did drop the school milage rate in the county, just a tad. Without DeSantis leadership these counties in FL were on a tear raising rates and fees.

Love how this gets trotted out each time. And each time. And people post experiences with actually dealing with school boards, and school board members. And it is ignored. Until the next time it’s trotted out. ________________ People hate you. Train like it.

Can’t get a hard answer due to the lack of transparency in Anchorage government. Supposedly 40-50% of property faxes go to the school district. We have no income or sales tax but the 5th highest property taxes in the country. I pay roughly $650/month in property taxes. With the latest assessment which I’m appealing and the increase the city council is pushing that’s going to go up to $850/month. My daughter can deflate your daughter's soccer ball.

I kind of think that is Franks point. If someone has an issue with the school, school board or being ignored, then run. Unfortunately most just want to stand on the sidelines and complain. I currently serve on our local school board and have for 9 out of the last 11 years, with 3 more coming up. When I first got elected, our district was not in a very good position. We were able to change the board over, make changes in the appropriate administrative positions and we are doing very well right now. We have one of, if not the largest, Ag program in the state, with our own on campus farm. We’ve paid down over $25 million in debt over the last 7 years and will only hold just under $1.2m in debt after this fiscal year. Our tax rate is the lowest in our county and is lower than it was in the mid 1990’s. Our starting teacher pay rate is in the top 40% in the entire St. Louis area. Oh, and our students are performing pretty well also. My point is, changes can happen, if you get the right people in place. We’ve been fortunate to have that right mix over the last 7 years. Communication and transparency are key. You have that and you’ll build trust with stakeholders, staff and students. I do think where school districts really need to focus on is how they are planning for the future. Are the roofs on a cycle to be replaced, HVAC, paving, turf athletic fields etc. So many schools don’t budget for those in the long term and throw it to the tax payers in the r form of a bond issue. In my opinion, a bond issue should only be for large capital projects. New additions, new buildings if growth is happening, but not necessarily for items that you know ahead of time will need replaced. The easy thing is to run a bond issue. But that’s not always the best. Sorry, got off in the weeds a bit. My point is, if change needs to happen, run. Talk to other like minded individuals and get them to run also. You can turn over a board in 2 years time if things fall into place. It’s not easy. I’ve been part of some amazing accomplishments and also things that I look back now and wish I’d have done differently. The important part is working to do what’s best for the students, taxpayers, staff and district.

80% of my property tax goes to the public schools. My kids are homeschooled and have never attended public school a day in their lives. The other 20% goes towards county road maintenance, the township fire department, and the sheriff's department. You know, stuff that actually matters. I'd be unhappy if they cut that and kept the schools. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

Feel free to go back and look up what I’ve written on it in the past. Not writing it again because it won’t change a thing. And in 3-6 months when this comes up again, it will be ignored and the tired old “nobody wants to get involved” will rear its head. It’s pretty ignorant to claim parents don't get involved seeing that during the last 5 years the FBI starting going after parents for……..you guessed it….getting involved. Education is about the grift. And grifters don’t like giving up the gravy train. ________________ People hate you. Train like it.
