The Cook County Board voted Wednesday to repeal the Chicago-area county’s controversial soda tax, after a public backlash to the penny-per-ounce charge. Low-tax advocates cheered the decision as a blow to the “nanny-state crusade.” Cook County, which includes Chicago, was the largest jurisdiction in the country with a soda tax. "If there is one city America's tax and spenders should be able muscle through the latest tax fad, it would be Chicago. And yet in this tax and spend, Democrat-run city, consumers forced the city council to cough up their recent tax hike and repeal the soda tax," Grover Norquist, president of the anti-tax Americans for Tax Reform, said in a statement. Wednesday’s vote would nix the soda tax -- which only recently went into effect -- by December. Proponents of the tax claimed it would improve public health by discouraging the purchase of sugary drinks, which have been connected to health issues like obesity and Type 2 diabetes. But critics argued it hurt retailers and hit low-income residents particularly hard. “Nothing good has come from Cook County’s beverage tax. Residents and consumers have been forced to pay more on over 1,000 everyday beverages, including diet drinks,” the anti-tax Can the Tax Coalition said in a statement on its website. After delays related to a lawsuit from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, the tax on sugary beverages went into effect this past August. David Goldenberg, a spokesman for the anti-tax coalition, told Fox News that one problem with the tax was that similar beverages would be treated differently depending on how they were packaged. For instance, he said, a sweet bottled drink would be taxed while a similar beverage from a barista would be exempt. “It had nothing to do with health -- everything to do with revenue” Goldberg said. The Chicago Tribune reported that the American Beverage Association and store owners spent millions pushing for repeal, while soda tax crusader Michael Bloomberg backed an even more expensive ad campaign to preserve the tax. Revenue was a factor. In her 2018 budget address last week, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, a supporter of the soda tax, reportedly argued that an estimated $200 million a year from the tax would help avoid budget cuts. http://www.foxnews.com/politic...y-state-crusade.html

This tax blew up in their faces! Toni Preckwinkle especially- Cook Co board president. She assumed that the tax would shore up this budget gap. But hey, it's for the Chillren and all... that piece of shit Bloomberg was tossing money at the adds on the radio. " have you ever seen a child so obese he can't walk? This tax will solve all of that!" People (me included) just went over the border to do our shopping. And we made it worth it, if we're going to drive, we're going to spend more money to make the trip worth it. Cook Co lost out on a lot of $. Meanwhile, Will & Lake Co, Indiana were laughing all the way to the bank. Remember, this is all one big game of chess! Stay three or four moves ahead of your opponent. People are trying to make a run at Rahms mayoral seat. He's weak... Preckwinkle was one of those people that want(ed) that seat. Well, she gone! No way her people will vote for her after the price of "Red Pop" or "Grape Drank" went up. ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. Yeah, so they repealed it, but today's October 11 and they intend to keep on collecting it through November. I guess they just have to prove that the sane people will still travel to avoid oppressive taxation for that much longer. Preckwinkle will no-doubt lay off a bunch of doctors and cops who she's figured a way to pay for the last few years, blame the tax payers, find something else to tax, and remain a Liberal darling. I hope she and the entire Crook County board lose the next election. -------------------------- Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats. -- H L Mencken I always prefer reality when I can figure out what it is. -- JALLEN 10/18/18

Ya know what get's me about all this? People here are in an uproar about a penny an ounce tax of their soda. I've never seen so many people so upset about anything prior to this. But NOTHING about the theft, the corruption, the patronage, the nepotism, the out and out theft or any of the other shenanigans that go on here. So the thieves here are stealing millions from the taxpayers and nobody apparently gives a rat's ass. But tax their soda and holy shit, look out. What a bunch of third world, inbred morons.

Is there any law against someone from there driving into Indiana, purchasing ammunition for personal use, and driving it home for use there? Taxing retail sales has nothing to do with purchases brought home from other states.

I live just across the county line in Lake County. Even before these dimwits imposed a soda pop tax, people have been flocking to adjoining counties to go shopping. I get the biggest kick out of stores that have banners proclaiming "No Crook County Taxes Here!" _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

Yeah, that's the Democrat way. I remember a couple of years ago the State had one of its regular budget crisis. Rather than cutting some patronage jobs or pork projects, they closed all the highway rest stops. _____________________________________________________________________ “One of the common failings among honorable people is a failure to appreciate how thoroughly dishonorable some other people can be, and how dangerous it is to trust them.” – Thomas Sowell

Seattle passed this same tax. The claim was the revenue would be $300-$500 thousand in the first year. After a year the city refused to release the numbers. Then said the revenue was "less the $200,000." After more delay the city released the actual revenue: $108,013.04. Well, it was "less then $200,000." “ The work of destruction is quick, easy and exhilarating; the work of creation is slow, laborious and dull.
