Staring back from the abyss |
I've finally gotten around to putting this thing together and am looking for suggestions. I have a Pelican case for my portable ham setup (radio, solar panel, battery, antenna, analyzer, solar controller, etc...). I picked up a roll of fine mesh copper "fabric" and would like to line the inside of the Pelican case with said fabric/mesh. Question is, how do I do that and get it to stick and stay in place. I was thinking maybe a glue gun, just some drops of Super Glue, or maybe some sticky sided Velcro tabs. Not quite sure how to make this work. Has anybody done this with success? Ideas? BTW, this new pick-n-pluck Pelican foam is fantastic! MUCH better than the old cut-your-own foam. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

That may be the ticket. Thanks. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

Just make sure to mask-off anything you don't want it on, and for a good ways around the area in which you're spraying. That stuff can be very messy unless Precautions Are Taken "America is at that awkward stage. I was thinking maybe pre-cutting the fabric to the correct dimensions and then spraying the fabric vs. spraying the inside of the case. Would that work better? ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Doug Patton.

I think you’ll need to spray both the case and the material being placed inside…..at least that’s my experience with spray adhesives ________________________ Those who trade liberty for security have neither

I’ll second the 3M Super 77! That stuff is great. Just make sure you have some acetone and rags/Q-tips ready before you start spraying.

Spraying both surfaces, allowing a short "cure" time, then sticking them together results in the strongest bond: Yes. But, if he tries to spray the fine mesh screen material he'll end up with the inside-facing surface being sticky, too. Then again: If the mesh is under the padding perhaps that won't matter. Yep, it'll be under the foam. Adhered directly to the plastic. That's the plan anyway. I'm assuming that if I allow a good cure time and let it dry well, it won't be an issue with the foam sticking to it. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." They make copper foil to put in electric guitars that has adhesive already applied.

Just make sure you electrically bond the upper and lower portions of the case, you will also have to figure out a gasket or seal arrangement where the case halves join, and also attach a ground nut somewhere so you can ground the case to earth when not in use.

As I understand it, a free standing case with no lines feeding it does not need a ground. It certainly couldn't hurt, but wouldn't be necessary in an EMP scenario. Your point about the seal is something I've been thinking about though. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Copper foil tape. It's definitely not just for guitars Buy from digikey or McMaster. This would be the expensive and easy button.

I've used Shoe-Goo for all sorts of projects. A thin layer will stick to just about anything. It does dry somewhat quick, so do it in sections.

Might try some silicone or aquarium sealant, just on the off chance you want to remove it someday. Don't think you'd need the stuff with mildew killer. Either way, sounds like a fun project.

The success of a solution usually depends upon your point of view |
You will not have to ground it for it to work, but without grounding it, it could build up and retain a charge on the outside of the mesh. The seam of the case will be the weak spot and everything inside the case is riding on it. Have you considered making pouches out the the mesh to seal the individual components separately and then placing them in the case? “We truly live in a wondrous age of stupid.” - 83v45magna "I think it's important that people understand free speech doesn't mean free from consequences societally or politically or culturally." -Pranjit Kalita, founder and CIO of Birkoa Capital Management
