ETA: A result of global warming, no doubt. Smile

“Around 70 million Americans are in the eye of a Storm Finn, a massive weather system that will bring blizzards, tornadoes and frigid temperatures.

The National Weather Service has warned that Finn could bring record-breaking Arctic conditions across the Plains and throughout the western part of the country with blizzards expected in Chicago and St. Louis.

As a result of that cold air, temperatures could drop to 50 below in the Plains and as far west as Seattle. …”

WHy is it we hear of this from the sensationalists at the Daily Mail?

We tend to call them cold fronts down here and they come every winter. In Texas, they're "Blue Northers"

So winter being winter. It must be really bad if they had to give it a name. I prefer weather in my youth. It just was what it was. No hyperbole, no 24 hour coverage about it. It’s cold, go inside, have a plan and a couple backup plans, have food staples, stay inside till the blizzard passes. Or something close to that. Odds are you will live. The shoveling the next day will be a bitch though. Lol

What's up with the naming of routine storms now?

I get that you want to name Hurricanes but now just regular storms? This crap is ridiculous. Roll Eyes

Living just South/Southeast of the usual snow/ice/rain line here in Maryland, I’m well accustomed to the press talking about the disaster that only occasionally materializes North and West of here while we get nothing but rain.

We’re going to see 2-3” or more tomorrow, but it’s coming with a warm front and the actual temperatures will be in the low 50s, it looks like. The wind chill will be more like upper 30s, but that’s only a problem as far as tree limbs and localized flooding.

Boring.

Part of the push to bring DEI to the Weathertainment industry. Winter storms feel inferior to hurricanes, so in the name of Equity and Inclusion, they feel they deserve names now too.

We are supposed to get another 2-4 inches of rain which is going to be coming down on absolutely saturated ground from December when we got about a total of 10-12 inches of rain that month in 3 storms.

My basement gets water in every time we have deluge rains and it's starting to become an issue to the point we may need French drains or something. I usually deal with this in June-August with heavy summer rains but already got water in there 3 times in December alone.

When the house was built they stupidly put in a Bilco door at the lowest point in the back of the house and of course rain wants to flow to that spot and get in that area.

Sensationalize much?* It's the Great Plains. These storms happen every winter, sometimes more than once per.

Lots of young people have been brought up on every change of temperature or season is the result of global warming. If we all just went hand to mouth feral the weather be idyllic, everyday.

I don't think much can be done about the northern hemisphere being tilted away from the Sun. Right now the southern hemisphere is in the middle of summer. They're probably complaining about "record-breaking" heat right now. Razz

Sensationalism. Clicks and Views. It's what sells now, and news of "weather" is targeted to the lowest common denominator, because they can't think for themselves and have to CONSTANTLY be told what to do and when to do it.

We're about to get 6-12 inches of snow starting tonight. The local weather people are all over it, but none of them have called it "Storm Finn."
Nor do they call the wind Maria.

It's been Winter for almost 3 weeks now. Winter isn't coming, it's already here (just taking some places longer to figure it out is all - this storm might fix that)
