I’m a “creative,” in a limited fashion. (Hands aren’t much good out of a kitchen, or for general labor.)

But, some of my friends are “creatives.” About half of them.

We’ve been calling the Corp types, who destroy the food, and atmosphere, and looks, of anything original, “dorks”, but they’re not “dorks” at all. Dorks tend to be pretty fun people.

For the most part, they’re “cool kids” and “frat boys,” post graduation.

The whole thought of a life of memos, and Instagram posts, and caring about clothing brands, terrifies me a bit.

I’m lost. I have never heard the term “creatives”, what does it even mean?

Ok, I looked it up. Why is the younger generation so fascinated by putting people in neat little boxes? Life is more complex than stuffing a real person in a neat little box. I guess since I’ve been an innovator in my line of work I can be a “creative” too. I still kind of don’t get it.

I *AM* old and this kind of labeling is purely asinine.

For me such conjures up the current stupidity with numerous bullshit terms for deviant gender associations.

I didn't know what a creative was either so I googled it.

Sounds like a term a lot of egomaniacs assign to themselves.

https://goinswriter.com/what-is-a-creative/

A creative is an artist. Not just a painter or musician or writer. She is someone who sees the world a little differently than others.

A creative is an individual. He is unique, someone who doesn't quite fit into any box. Some think of creatives as iconoclasts; others see them as rebels. Both are quite apt.

A creative is a thought leader. He influences people not necessarily through personality but through his innate gifts and talents.

And what, exactly, does a creative do?
Good question; sometimes they don't even know.

A creative creates art. Not to make a buck, but to make a difference. She writes to write, not to be noticed or to sell books. She sings to sing, for the pure joy of making music. And she paints to paint. (And so on…)

A creative colors outside the lines. On purpose. In so doing, she shows the world a whole new picture they never would have otherwise seen.

A creative breaks the rules. And as a result, he sets a new standard to follow.

I'm not artistic by any means, but as an engineer I creatively solve problems around the world at a large multinational corporation. If I lacked creativity, I'd just be a non-promotable Corporate drone whose career would be all routine work. On the other hand, I'm not excessively devoted to creatively solving everything when standard tried and true solutions deliver results and typically allow me to delegate to a junior engineer.

The word creative has always been an adjective, but now I look at at online dictionary and it's listed as a noun also.

I realize the English language is ever evolving, but youth-driven slang exists sometimes only to be different. In terms of the ability to be descriptive, English excels among other languages We already have an extremely well-stocked toolkit of words and phrases.

Sorry, Aglifter, I know this is not what you're looking for.

I work in marketing, specifically in an area closely associated with the people who would identify themselves as "creatives." I call the worst of them hipster douchebags, because that's what they are. More concerned about style and associating the brand with their perception of what is "cool" than performance or results.

See? There ya go- hipster douchebags, or douchebag hipsters- either way. The words conjure up vivid imagery. No need to make nouns out of adjectives and end up confusing the old people.

I think instead of hipster douchebags, or nutjobs, “Attention Whore”, may be a more accurate description.

In advertising, creatives are the graphic designers, art directors, copywriters and creative directors. In an earlier time (circa Mad Men), account executives were known as "suits." Since virtually no one wears a suit anymore, account folk are referred to in the plural as "account."

Addressing Bigwagon's comment about creatives more concerned with what's cool than what's on-brand, virtually all successful creatives work off of a marketing strategy from which the creatives try to extract the creative challenge. Any concepts that come up are always measured by "is the concept on-strategy?" It doesn't matter how clever it is if the concept isn't on-strategy.

Just say'n. Wink

Took me a few minutes too Chongo, I eventually realize they are calling people what they do...kinda like the British call people in the trades by what they do, ie “brickies” for masons or bricklayers, “chippies” for carpenters (they make wood chips)

But yeah, hipster douche bags works for me
