This is why you carry a gun.

I NEVER go out on the trail without at least a .44 mag. Typically I'm carrying an LAR Grizzly in 45 win mag. Mrs. DF used to kind of roll eyes when we were young and out hiking the mountains until we had a run-in with some aggressive wildlife. I didn't have to fire, but she was grateful I was armed. Now she makes sure I am before we even leave the house. This guy will likely never again hit the hills without a heater.

I think he finally picked up a rock and threw it at the cat. I get why he was reluctant to bend down and make himself appear smaller and possibly cause a charge but it was likely what ran the cat off.

Yep.

Walking toward the cat after you see it isn’t going to help your cause either. Especially when she has the little ones with her.

Our Utah mountains are covered with these cats. If you are hiking the Wasatch front the cougars are watching you. Ain't no way around it. We have very few problems with the mountain lions. The deer fawns on the other hand have big problems with these cats.

Perhaps it saw something off to the right of the screen out outside the camera view?

Saw a conversation about the video on another site earlier but the link wouldn’t work for me. Someone in that thread mentioned he finally had the sense to bean it with a rock, which would make sense by the cat’s reaction.

This cat was not hunting the hiker. It was intimidating him. Notice how she was bluff charging, dog tracking and growling? These are tactics to drive a threat away. As soon as she figured he was far enough up the trail, she bugged out. If he were being hunted, she would have stayed hidden and quiet until she pounced.
