A hammer drill
may do the job. A rotary hammer
will do the job.
Plus a rotary hammer like mine, that can be put in hammer-only mode, can be used for scaling, and cutting stone, brick, etc.
Finally: What I bought has your forum handle on it. See:
I would not buy a hammer drill for that purpose, but a rotary hammer. It's Kismet

jimb888^^^This^^^ Hilti is arguable the best, Bosch is much cheaper and excellent as well. The Bosch cordless rotory hammers are superb.
Total overkill to just drill into a bric k, but if you want to drill into concrete or rock tomorrow, a hammer drill won't do it whereas a Rotohammer will get it done in seconds.

How big, heavy a bracket?
Brick and CUM will drill ok with a masonry bit in a regular drill. Buy a small bit 1/8 and predrill. Them follow with the size needed.
I often drill for those plastic inserts and drive a tight screw with an impact driver.

PykerI've had a corded Bosch hammer drill for about 15 years. It does everything I've needed it to do. Cost me about $80 I think.

You could use almost anything for that. I'd just use my cordless hammer drill for that.
