Really? Wasn't aware of that. Remember him from the 70's. I was young.
I had always thought he was viewed as a good foreighn ambassador.

Glad to not hear his voice. He made some remarks about Ukraine which were rather tone deaf and then wisely shut the fuck up.

I remember Kissinger and thought he was an excellent Secretary of State under Nixon but thats as far as it went. If I recall, Nixon and Kissinger really didn't like each other very much but they each had a role to play.

He was interviewed by PBS this week about both current and past leaders in the world.

The Internet does not make great leaders -

Finally, he sees a 'painful' need for better leaders.

As much as I hated Nixon his assessments of previous Presidents was dead on. He was also very perceptive of foreign leaders.

Those of us assigned to Marine detachments and American Embassies/Consulates during his time as US Secretary of State had a so-so relationship with him from my POV. Prior to his appointment as Secretary of State, we provided the personal protection for the US Secretary of State. Then it changed with his appointment and continues to this day if I'm not mistaken.

Mr. Kissinger thought he should have US Secret Service protection vs Marines. We'd only been doing it since 1948 and we were the enlisted unwashed. In any case, he came through a couple of times with his USSS details and we were tasked with guarding the gear, papers and whatever else. I can remember carrying his bags onto his 707 (or 727?) and his Air Force cook onboard was making sausage, eggs and coffee etc. for him and his entourage. We went back to the Marine House after he left and had our own steak and egg breakfast which I can guarantee was way better than he ate. That night we had a 'Wheels Up' party with some embassy folks and a couple of hold over USSS agents. Good times.

Two final points, regardless of my statements above, I do have a lot of respect for him. He's extremely bright and knowledgeable. I don't agree with everything he recommended but he was a capable US Secretary of State during that time period. Compare him today to Biden and tell me who has a better grasp with Kissinger at 99 years old. Final point, my experience with the USSS was always excellent and professional. They treated us well. Additionally, they were fit and could keep up with us with us on any run. That's saying something since we were in our early to mid 20's and ran almost daily as part of our job (the Marine House is usually 5-10 miles from the Embassy or Consulate and we drilled constantly on getting to the Embassy by running using various routes simulating Embassy drama and our Embassy vehicle unable to make through the crowds.

Now that I think about it, how bad would it have been to work for John Kerry or Hillary Clinton when they were Secretary of State? Geez, I'd take Kissinger over them.

I was on a protection detail at the UN ageneral Assembly in NYC in the 70's. When Kissinger showed up at various functions he was received like a rock star by the other diplomats. He was highly respected worldwide. One smart guy and when he talked everybody listened.

Early during dating my wife, she was working a restaurant. I prank phoned her at work and pretended to be Kissinger in my best impression. Tried to make reservations when they didn't take them. "I'm sorry we don't take reservations" "Not even for the presidential party?" She didn't know it was me was going to get a manager.

Kissinger is an interesting person and accomplished a great deal during his time as a statesman. He definitely leans toward global elitism. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment came in the mid 1970s when he got the Saudis and then the rest of the world to accept the petrodollar. It was a brilliant play that helped the USA immensely.

Didn’t he pretty much set China up to become the manufacturing giant (and economic/military problem) they have become today? As I remember, China was starving (like North Korea is) until Nixon and Kissinger came to an agreement with them.

And caused the price of gasoline to jump from 25 cents a gallon to 75 cents almost overnight. Any one else remember the gas lines of the '70s? Screw Kissinger.
